A bit like Spring cleaning, a tidy up of the outside is a necessity. The chances are that fences have taken a hammering and this is an ideal time to think about adding a spot of colour in a bright new shade. If paint is a bold choice for you then consider some coloured wood stain for a more subtle look. Unless you are in the habit of changing your fence colour again in Autumn - consider how it will look in Winter as well as Summer and that it co-ordinates with your house. I love how this picket-fence matches the weatherboards and adds depth to the border with coordinated planting.

We have to be prepared for our Summer to hit as it could happen at anytime and be over too soon! The first decent weather will see us out there preparing garden furniture for the moment it's needed. Painted furniture is a great option - a simple and inexpensive way of getting a whole new look for your garden each year. For more traditional country gardens and planting a pretty pastel shade with complimentary cushions will look lovely whilst a contemporary garden could hold a bolder colour choice - just approach your outside space as you would your interior and ensure paint and planting work together.
