Kitchen islands have come a long way from being just a place for preparing food. It is a prime gathering spot and a place for homeowners to add personal touches: beautiful rich tones, sparkly finishes, comfortable seating — and color, whether it's just a little or a lot. You can bring in color through a contrasting finish for the island base, the countertop, or let your seating and lighting draw your eye to its beauty.

Paint the base and bring in chairs that look like they belong in a dining room. This island becomes an elegant Old-World centerpiece with its red painted base and richly patterned upholstered chairs. It looks made for sit-down dinners.

If you have a small island, take the opportunity to use stools in a bold color, particularly if your island base finish is the same as the rest of your cabinetry.

Add impact to a long narrow modern island by adding clean-lined, colorful seating. These Series 7 Stools have long chrome legs which increase the visibility of the island without overpowering it.
A nice fresh lime hue on the seating also goes well with a modern island design. It is not too bold, but still stands out and looks great with chrome. For a special event, bring in splashes of that color to the top of the island with flowers or a bowl of limes and lemons.
If your island opens to another room, use upholstered seating that has a color and a finish that fits with the adjoining room. The seating creates a great transition to the other space.
Add a colorful countertop. Allow it to shine using clear glass pendants above.

Go eclectic with a painted island base. What a personality this purple table-style island has!
Red is another fun color for the base. When distressed and used with bin or cup pulls, it can feel rustic or country. Carry the color to the inside of a glass-front or open cabinet for more delicious color.
Blues and greens are choices for a contrasting color for your island. They are both cool, relaxing colors and work well with most styles.
Soften the look of a painted island with woven chairs. They have natural appeal and go with everything.

A painted island also works very well in a kitchen with stained cabinets.

Oh, the power of lighting. It can take good design to greatness. Over an island, it becomes a floating crown shining down. These large drum pendants in a steely blue-gray finish give a rich finishing touch to the paint palette used on the cabinets and island base.

These big shiny pendants along with the rich blue fabric against the black painted X-back chairs turn this island into a chic focal point that should be shown off as often as possible.

You can even think of your island storage as an opportunity for adding character and color with books, baking bowls, and favorite accents.
