Houzz Contributor. Hi There! I currently live in a 1920s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia. I've been writing about design online for quite a few years over at Hatch: The Design Public Blog.

I am super lucky. My parents bought a tiny (600 square feet) cottage on Cape Cod a few years back. I just spent a few days there and thought I'd share a few images with you.
When we decorated the house, we went along with the vibe the house originally gave us. This vibe came from the existing weathered shingles, beach roses and sweet peas, white walls, and coastal cottage details like beadboard. Some of the furniture came with the joint, some was repainted and brought up from the basement of my parent's full-time home, some was plucked from junk stores, and a large number of pieces were picked up at this wonderful store in Falmouth called Flowersticks. Unfortunately, it closed, but they still have a more clothing-centric store in Osterville that carries a few pieces of antique furnishings.
While Shabby Chic may no longer be the raging trend in most decorating circles, it's perfect for this place. It helps us let down and be comfy, and adds to the sense of peace the proximity to the ocean provides. Furniture was also chosen in order to add storage (there is one minuscule closet in the hallway and that's it). This includes a small antique armoire, side tables with drawers, beds with built in drawers underneath, and plenty of hooks on the walls for hanging up clothing.
As a little bonus, here are a few of my favorite coastal home / cottage inspirations. Just search these titles at your favorite online bookstore and they should come right up:

This room is only big enough for a single bed and a bedside table. This mini-bureau serves as a bedside table and room for clothes. The bed has two large drawers underneath for linen storage, and hooks on the doors serve as the "closet" for hanging clothes.
Sometimes small furniture like this tiny bench can make a room feel larger. Side note: Almost all of the artwork in the cottage is my mother's photography.
The floral grandma chairs and country plaid couch came with the place, and we assumed we'd ditch them immediately, but it's six years later and they've grown on us!
I found the peeling-paint nightstand at a junk store for $15. The extra shelves are great for storage. The photograph above was taken in the Bahamas. It's funny, half the pictures in India Hicks' book "Island Life" are very similar to the shots my mother took on Eleuthra and Harbor Island.
The star dinnerware was found at fishseddy.com. I think it's been discontinued, but the "Manhattan Blue Plate" series has a similar look. Restaurant grade china stands up really well to the wear and tear vacationers put plates through.
2010 UPDATE: Can't bring ourselves to get rid of the floral chairs, as they have become cuter as they faded in the sunlight. However, their arms are shredded so they needed covers.
Kit Pollard What a fantastic little house! It looks like a perfect place to spend a relaxing week or two (or more)...and I love that it sounds like the decorating was really inspired by the house and location. That makes so much sense.
Funny, too - a few years ago, we gave my mother and mother-in-law those frames as gifts. I found them at a store called South Moon Under that's in the MD/DC/VA/DE area. I think they still carry them.
Becky Harris Hey Al, do you think we'll make it for Labor Day? I need to look at my calendar b/c I 'm going to Depeche Mode on the first :) I'd love to show your house befores and afters here. Let me know if you have any good pictures!
Linsey Krolik I am currently staying in Sandwich on Cape Cod in a cottage rental. Love this place! So many of the touches you mention are here in this place too. The magazine choice here is Coastal Living - you might want to pick that one up, since Cottage Living isn't available any more. Enjoy your space - lucky indeed!
Tracey Johnson Cottage inspiration! I love the comfortableness that just oozes from your photos. That's how I want my house to look and feel. Thanks for sharing.
Becky Harris linseyk, I'm still mourning the loss of Cottage Living, but I saved every issue and you can still find used issues on Amazon. A lot of people from that magazine are now at Coastal, including the EIC, so Coastal has been getting even better and better with each new issue this year!
I love Sandwich. This joint is actually in Mashpee, not too far from Sandwich. Sandwich has THE BEST antique stores, doesn't it?
reclaimingdinner I love and miss Cottage Living! It was my favorite and I'm so glad I saved every copy. I didn't realize alot of the people ended up at Coastal but it makes sense why all of the sudden I've been drawn to that mag. :) Love the cottage! :)
rizanda Hi Becky! I live in South Africa and is very fortunate to be able to go to friends' holiday home in Cape Town. They have just started out re-decorating the place in Blaauwberg Strand. I don't have to pay for using the place, but need to add to their Cape Cod theme!! Your pictures gave me a very good idea of what it's all about! I live inland in Gauteng in SA. I'm very much inspired and can't wait to get down there! Go CAPE COD and CAPE TOWN!!!
Jan C. Hi, I just came across this house. It is the most adorable house. I live in Mass. and I just came back from a week at the Cape where I rented a nice little house. This one is so beautiful and it looks like it is near the ocean. Can you please tell me where you got that great map of Cape Cod? I have been looking for one.
Becky Harris Hi Janice, it's a chart some boating friends gave my parents - I believe it was new a few years ago, not an antique or anything. I would just search out "nautical chart cape cod" and I'm sure you'll find one.
beutfam I don't know if you are still getting comments about this article, but it's one of my faves and I keep coming back to it and saved just about all the photos from it! Anyway, a couple of questions for you. Do you know what color that little green bench is painted, I just love it!! Also, I'd love any suggestions for shops on the Cape from you since we are going there on Saturday for a week. Thanks!!
You can email me at beutfam@gmail.com
Becky Harris OH thanks beutfam! Where are you going on the Cape? My favorite source for furniture was Flowersticks in Falmouth, but they have changed things up - they now have a very nice clothing boutique in Osterville (last time I checked) with only a few accessories here and there. For shopping in general, you can't beat Provincetown, though it can be a long trek from other parts of the Cape as it's all the way on the end. A real favorite of mine is John Derian's shop in the back of his house!
For just kind of browsing, I like P-town, Chatham, Osterville, and Falmouth. Hyannis is a little more honky-tonk, and it's fun - as kids we LOVED the big army-navy store there. I would also recommend having dinner at The Landfall in Wood's Hole. It is such a fun atmosphere right on the harbor near the ferry. I also recommend Coonamesset (sp?) and Popponesset, especially for clam chowder. The Raw Bar in New Seabury's marketplace has the most gigantic lobster rolls on the planet - if you have young kids it's fun to go there because they have live music in the evenings, mini-golf and ice cream all in one spot.
I'm not sure on the bench, it actually came in that color - I think it was a pretty inexpensive import but can't remember where we bought it.
Oh, Sandwich has great antiques shops, and if you want to have an afternoon antiquing, just take route 6A and wander your way up (or is it down?) the Cape from Sandwich. It's beautiful and full of antique stores. Have a wonderful trip!
hikerpikes Did you mention that your parents rent this out? I am a coastal new englander, now in the seacoast of new hampshire. If they rent weekly we would be interested. Can you point me in the right direction?
Becky Harris They don't, but our next door neighbors do - too funny you're writing me this, I am in the cottage right now! I'm off to google around and see if I can find it - they are the nicest people. FYI - It's definitely not a quiet area - lots of kids running around!
Hmm, I don't see our other next door neighbors on here - they do tend to get the same people each summer and fill up quickly. However, a bunch of the oceanfront cottages (Maushop Village, New Seabury) are for rent on this site:
mercedes13299 Hi Becky, You are my favourite Houzz blogger and the pictures of your parent's beach house are beautiful and inviting. What a warm, gorgeous place! You mention under one of the photos that the house is straight across the sound from Nantucket. My aunt and uncle live in Nantucket in a historic house that has been owned by her family for many generations. I live in Australia and will one day visit Maine, Cape Cod and Nantucket. Thank you for sharing photos of your parent's beautiful beach house. :o)
Becky Harris Seashoregirl, yes, if you look beyond the picket fence through the windows, that's Nantucket Sound right beyond and Martha's Vineyard is visible to the right (I don't think you can see it in these pictures though).
I love the way you decorated it. Charming!
Side note: LOVE Vivaterra! They have beautiful and unique pieces.
The designs vary, but I see the blues and greens the most often in shops.
Funny, too - a few years ago, we gave my mother and mother-in-law those frames as gifts. I found them at a store called South Moon Under that's in the MD/DC/VA/DE area. I think they still carry them.

This one is next door, but not the neighbors I was talking about. I haven't met them, but my parents say they are super-nice:
