The First Impression: Cool Doors

When we redid our whole house a few years ago, we left the front door to the very end. It became an afterthought. I wouldn't make that mistake again.

I'm happy with how it turned out - a coat of paint was enough to spruce it up - but completely underestimated how important the door is to the overall look of a house. Color, design elements, shape, lighting - they're all important to think about and all play a real role in how your house looks overall.

Fortunately, that also means you can give your house an aesthetic overhaul just by updating your door. No, it's not an inexpensive enterprise, but it is less costly than, say, residing a whole house.

I've been thinking about this more than usual lately, after watching the finale of "9 by Design" on Bravo (anyone else watching?). The Novogratzs, the designer couple the show's about, stenciled big, surfer-inspired numbers on the doors of the Bungalow Hotel in New Jersey. I love the look and it's a great reminder that little things can make a big difference.

If you're in the market for a new door, or just a little change, here's some inspiration:
I was partly inspired to write this ideabook because I am so in love with these doors at the Bungalow Hotel. I can't stop thinking about the door numbers!
These doors almost remind me of refrigerator doors - they're super space agey. And just right for the end of a path that's equally out of this world.
There's no way I could write an ideabook about doors without including this yellow door - it's one of my favorites. It's also a good reminder that sometimes, all you need is a great coat of paint to give something a facelift.
I like the way the circles on these doors contrast with the roofline. Plus, the whole look has kind of a Brady Bunch retro vibe that I find very appealing.
I have to be honest - glass doors make me a little nervous, just from a safety perspective, but they sure do look great.
I like everything about this simple door - the color and the cool shade.
These angles and windows are interesting enough to attract attention from the inside, too.
These heavy, detailed wooden doors are solid and serious.
It's not practical to wallpaper doors to the outside, of course (unless you only wallpapered the inside), but I love the look.
This foggy glass and the simple lines have a decidedly Asian feel that I like very much.
Speaking of Asian influences, I love the simplicity of these details.
These little windows feel modern, but also remind me of the oh-so-midcentury door on my parents' house when I was growing up.
This door is both solid and ornate and works perfectly with the staid brick.
This door is so incredible - I think about it all the time. What a statement!

jopadiet The first photo shows the great influence of Spanish architecture used in Quito. The second photo is a picture of the Palace in downtown Quito. It's so stunning, and massive!

jopadiet The following photos are of the Palace Entry. This is where school children and others can tour the Palace. It's so beautiful! Ok, the chandelier was just too beautiful not to share. I'm sure it was designed before Cinderella's carriage, but it sure looks like a magical carriage to me!

Linda-Marie Leyble Hi - A few weeks ago I did some faux finishing in a famous actress' house in East Hampton and this beautiful Morrocan beauty (I think it's teak) was the entry door. She also had a beautiful boat sculpture made of wood and driftwood at the entry. Beachy chic!

Casart Coverings Very cool and unusual door concepts. Here are two others: One with painted, faux plaster shells and the same within a space with removable and reusable faux linen wallpaper.

Dawn Ok... so it's not a door that is ON my house, but it is my trademark that I take to all of the jewelry/craft shows I go to. It never fails to get numerous comments and compliments. I found it at ReStore. They were going to throw it out.

Dawn aebk: I also take holiday photos of doors and windows. There is just something about them... People say that eyes are the windows of the soul. Perhaps the windows/doors/openings are like the eyes/soul of a building.

Danenberg Design Doors are a favorite for me and my husband / business partner. Thanks for all of the examples. I particularly like old 'vintage' doors from other countries. They are awesome. In addition to old doors, I think really tall doors or doors with glass inserts are beautiful. Also, all-glass doors. Here are a some photos from our neck of the woods in Northern CA.

Fine Art & Portraits by Laurel Thanks Kit and all for your wonderful input! Those asymmetrical glass doors with their fractured pediment are FABULOUS! I've also been fascinated with doors since childhood and agree with sunshine, about their importance. I've noticed that in the Southern states, where hospitality is king (queen?), residential architecture seems to frame the front entry, as if to say "Here it is! Come on in." Love that attitude.

Pat Lukes Um...OK...the door number in the first photo is cool, no question, but that oversized plant sculpture outside the door is mind blowing. I love it.

I thought seen as ye are all door experts you might have some ideas. I would like it bright and colourful. I was thinking of putting a door knocker and maybe letter box slot, just to add to it.
