It's not often a near-perfect preservation of 1950s American residential architecture surfaces on the real estate market. For Houzz community member ncgraciemay, this mid-century North Carolina ranch was a must-have. Looking to close on the house this month, she plans to begin renovations on the place in August. Until then, she has invited us to help her settle some critical design decisions that will need to be made — from the exterior paint color to the kitchen floor material. saphirebear I'm facing a similar situation. Just closed on a one-owner 1966 house that has vintage cabinets and original oven with analog clock! We're trying to respect what's there while still bringing it into the 21st century.

anifig I like the entry tile and would suggest you save some pieces of the rug and maybe frame some squares as wall art purely as a friendly reminder of what once was.

shariann Looks very similar to my house in Don Mills,Ontario ,Canada.Though my house has been updated a few times since 1956(when it was built)the structure remains intact.I will be very interested to see the finished product when it is done. Shari Robertson

Art By Gretchen OMG! This is so similar to the "fixer" Eichler we purchased in CA. Near original owners...little done to the house in 40+ years. Ours was built in 1955. We are remodeling one room at a time...all ourselves. We are NOT contractors! I will be excited to follow your project! Good luck and god speed! ;-)

Lowes #1636 Can you do something about the glossy finish on the cypress panelling? I think a matte or oiled look would be better.

Robin Birrell Wow! Awesome find! The bathroom in our newly purchased 1950's ranch is very similar except it's "seafoam" green instead of pink. The tile is in great shape so I decided to go with it instead of tearing it out. I painted the walls above the tile a fresh but warm white and updated the chrome fixtures in keeping with the original style. Adding a couple of glass accessories w/ a greenish cast brought it all together. We are also tearing out the sheet linoleum and putting in light colored tile in a larger square than the walls in an effort to draw attention away from it's galley like feel.
