James and Lynsey Purl pick one major remodel project for their home every year. One year they moved a central wall. Another year they overhauled a bathroom. Last year they built a stone deck off their back door and installed an outdoor grill. "You don't have to do it all at once," says James, who has done much of the work himself. "You have to be patient," Lynsey says. "Plus this way of remodeling keeps us out of debt, and we don't have to settle."
This year's project is centered not on the house but on the heart, since the Purls are expecting their third child. Lynsey has spent months preparing the nursery and making space for their new arrival. "The baby's room is so tranquil and inviting that sometimes I just sit in there alone for a dose of calm energy," she says.
Houzz at a Glance Who lives here: James and Lynsey Purl, Ava (6 years old) and Hudson (3) Size: 1,741 square feet; 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms Location: Lake Highlands neighborhood of Dallas
Pink and gray reign in the new nursery, with feminine details and vintage filigree. Lynsey feels relieved that the nursery was completed well in advance of the baby's arrival. "Usually the third kiddo has to make do, but I wanted to welcome her home with a special space," she says.
Lynsey shopped Etsy to outfit the nursery with unique textiles. She says, "I didn't want to turn to page five of a catalog and say, 'Look, there's our home.'" Curtains: Martha & Ash, Etsy; dresser: Ikea; chandelier: eBay
A small, elegant dining room overlooks the front yard and greets guests as they enter the house. The farm table, which Lynsey found at an antiques store and painted white, seats six. "I love decorating, but it can be expensive. So the women in my family swap decor from house to house to keep it fresh," she says.
The couple moved the back wall of the dining room when they bought the house in 2005. They wanted more space in their living room, which shares the wall, and didn't mind losing square footage in the dining space. "I'm pretty good at fitting a lot into a small space," says Lynsey.
A French-style table and chairs perch at the edge of the kitchen in a cozy breakfast room. A tall matching cabinet provides storage and easy access to dishes, cake stands and serving bowls.
The heart of the Purl home is the living room. Comfort and functionality were key in designing this space. "We're a busy family, and everything needs to be durable for the kids," says James. "And while we don't have a lot of square footage, it's all well utilized." Hardwood floors and leather furniture make cleanup a snap, and most of the furniture does double duty as toy storage.
Gray ikat curtain panels frame French doors. Throw pillows in varying textiles on the sofa and club chairs echo the home's overall gray and white color scheme. "If Nate Berkus and Rachel Ashwell had a love child, that would be my style," says Lynsey.
Between the living room and the kitchen, an ornately framed chalkboard hangs above a set of drawers. A chalkboard label fronts each drawer. "It's all about staying organized," says Lynsey. "This is where I jot down our to-do list or sometimes a menu."
This unique antique shelving unit sits against another living room wall. "This piece helps keep toys tidy and off the floor," she says. "But I think I'm becoming the basket queen."
The gray and white color scheme continues in the master bedroom. Casual, traditional and elegant, the bedroom is outfitted with chevron curtain panels, mirrored side tables and a wooden sleigh bed.
Masculine details, linen shams and cozy knit textiles keep the room grounded. "It was important to me that our bedroom reflect our need for peace and comfort," says Lynsey.
The Purls enjoy decorating with natural objects and used a bundle of twigs from their front yard on top of their dresser. A botanical print, mirrored tray and chevron vase complete the vignette.
Ava and Hudson share a cheery bedroom. Mismatched letters and a rustic U.S. map hang above a distressed blue dresser, which also serves as a changing table.
The gray and white color theme continues in the children's bedroom, but red and yellow accents keep it playful. The trundle bed is easy to set up and maximizes square footage.
In the backyard, a charming kid-size house provides extra space for toys and imaginative play. "The kids are out there so much, we should probably include it in our home's square footage," says James.
A loft space, hardwood floors and pint-size furniture are a hit with the kids and their friends. "I'll probably just move out here when I'm old enough," says 6-year-old Ava.
The 80-foot sycamore trees in the front yard were a major draw when the Purls purchased their home. "Every home in this neighborhood is unique, and the old trees make it even more special," says James.
James, Lynsey, Hudson and Ava sit for a quick photo on their new back patio. "Remodeling our house one year at a time has allowed us to grow as a couple," says Lynsey. "Our tastes have changed over the years, and the slow pace means we can make our home functional for our family and stay more connected."

Dana Veach Lovely! Your home is fresh, calming, original, and inviting. Thanks for sharing!
creeser This is such a lovely home! So many people think they have to have their home instantly look like something out of a magazine and they get frustrated and burned out. This home shows the beauty of taking your time and getting it like you want it.
leslielevin I think your home may be one of my all time favorites from Houzz! I, too, am a Home Goods/Marshall's/TJ MAxx/Target shopper. Your house is a testament to taste and talent being the key ingredients to a beautiful home . . . not buckets of money spent!
City of Hampton Your home is lovely! So many special touches. Can you tell me the name of the exterior paint for the brick of your home? I have a ranch house that does not have attracttive brick and would like to paint and add some personality. I really like the color of your brick exterior. Thanks
blstafford Your home is very beautiful and well designed! I love everything and every detail you have put into it and it is exactly my style as well! We have just purchased an old farmhouse that needs complete remodeling and updated style and we plan to take the time as well. It is nice to see such a great outcome like your's to be my inspiration! Thanks for sharing and opening up your home to all of us!
Lanie Brown It is refreshing to hear the approach to take remodeling slowly. My husband & my tastes have grown together and evolved too, so our projects now are more successful than the initial remodeling we undertook when we bought our home as newlyweds.
lynn2445 Lovely home! In the nursery there is a wall hanging with "you are my sunshine". Was that purchased or diy? New granddaughter on the way and I would love one!
Revival Room I really like your style. I know a lot of thought went into all of your desicions, yet it looks clean and fresh. I especially like all of your organizational systems. Smart!
Joanna I love that you have taste, organization, and practicality in your decorating! Thank you so much for sharing. This is a home that is lived in and used for that... its beautiful to have a peek inside. I love the baby room. So precious!
Sarah Greenman Tebra Moore, as to your question about the curtains in the nursery - here is the link to Martha & Ash on Etsy: http://www.etsy.com/shop/MarthaAndAsh - They don't currently have the pink stripe in stock because these were custom made for the home owner. However, they have other colors on display and you can always message the shop owner and request a pink set of panels. Thanks for your question!
A. Peltier Interiors being a nursery designer I tend to be critical of those spaces but the children's rooms in this house are great. That nursery was done on a budget but looks so put together. Really enjoyed the article!
lbpurl lynn2445 - Thank you! The "you are my sunshine picture" is from surprise- HomeGoods. Although I know I have seen similar ones on etsy. Congrats!
lbpurl Tebra Moore- as Sarah said it was custom but they were WONDERFUL to work with and to be honest, the best quality drapes I have EVER owned. But everything else was on the low budget end so it was worth it. I told them what I was looking for and they really came through.
lbpurl Connie Abbott- The curtains from my dining room are from Target, the ones from my living room are just fabric I picked from Fabric Factory ( a local fabric store) and then hung them with clip hooks. The kid's bedroom curtains are from Target and our bedroom curtains are from Crate and Barrel. Hope that helps!
Elizabeth Conklin Fabulous home! I too am a Marshall's and Home Goods decorator for many things and its amazing what you can accomplish in a budget. This home is an inspiration. I really like the color and coordination of the dining room and small bar-might be my favorite part along with the outdoor play house for the kids. Congrats and best wishes for baby #3!
mphok is this a single storey home? i've been stressing on wether to build a single or double storey house simply coz i've never seen AMAZING single storey houses. but yours....heaven.
Susannah Mackean I absolutely love your home and all the great storage ideas. Think I am going to pinch quite a few ideas from you! I am currently waging a war against clutter and everything having a place, also only having things in your home and pictures on your wall that you love and are meaningful.

Tiffani Warren I really love your home. It's lovely and traditional in many ways but also has hints of the European countryside and Mediterranean styles I love so much. I'm really fond of the wine cabinet area, and I just feel so much love from that nursery. I always judge house tours by how comfortable I would feel as a guest at that house, and I totally want to hang out on your leather armchair and talk baby stuff! Is that weird? Haha. :)
Jayne-Sue Your house is beautiful!!! It is so warm and you get that real family home feeling. This house is such an inspiration and goes to show that taking your time and really thinking about the deco does pay off. Love love love it!
Thanks!
