Houzz is the new way to design your home.
I like the simplicity. However, my fireplace opening is convex on top (not straight as here) so such a simple, straight mantel would probably not work. It is a nice look to consider for future fireplaces, however, and is the first one saved into my Ideabook.
I like everything about this fp and mantel. The bricks painted white give the room a more sophisticated look than would, say, a multi-color orange brick and the mantel and surround are shaped and scaled perfectly, especially considering the size of the hearth.
Specifically the fp. Mine has a curved (convex) top like this one and the curved corbels, I believe they're called, are a great way to allow the use of a simple straight mantel. Without those corbels I believe you would need a mantel made with curved mouldings.
The fp mantel. Instead of a simple flat mantel, they used a few inches (not too much) of curved moulding underneath that goes well with the convex top near the fp opening.
The mantel - elegant and perfectly scaled for the size the fp
The Saarinen table and chairs - simple, easy to keep clean; hope they swivel.
The simplicity of mantel; however, I might have made it a bit thicker.
