When it comes to planting, there's nothing like the pleasures of a vegetable garden. It's a ton of work, but in the end it's the gift that keeps on giving. For months this year we had wonderful exotic lettuces for nightly salads. They don't just taste better, and not having to go to the grocery store make a salad that much more enjoyable!
Tomatoes are just getting ripe in our Midwestern locale, though I'm sure many of you have had them for weeks. Our beans were eaten by bunnies and our beets haven't done well 2 years in a row, but it doesn't stop us from trying.
Our one big mistake was not doing a raised bed right out the gate. It's been five years, and we just keep fighting back the grass that constantly threatens to take over. I'm determined someday to get those raised bed gardens done (along with a shed). So I'm on the hunt for good ideas. Here are some to consider as you think about planting seasons ahead.

Wood boxes are a classic for raised beds, but beware of using materials that will either rot or seep into the soil. Check with your local garden center or a garden designer for the best materials for your site.
