Using Traditional Textiles in Your Home (5 comments)

Are you bored of seeing the same patterns over and over again? Stripes, swirls, polka dots, leopard print...enough already! Take a cue from past traditions and infuse your space with hand printed or handmade textiles.

From ikats, suzanis, kilims, kente cloth to good old American quilts -- there is a lot of history and artistry to be found in vintage and antique textiles. Even if you can't find an original piece, you'll be surprised to find a variety of modern fabrics inspired by such prints. Mix and match patterns, or just stick with one bold pattern to bring new life to a space.
A suzani makes a beautiful bedspread, and becomes the focal point of this bedroom.

A vintage kilim is draped over a white headboard to add character, while the client's existing rug brings pattern to the floor.

Who doesn't love ikat? There is an abundance of modern permutations to choose from these days.

Quilts don't have to look old-fashioned. This one adds a graphic punch to the bed.

A mix of crewel embroidery, prints and an ethnic rug all work together splendidly!

I love this! It's not a textile, but the punched out pattern and the arch shapes in the built-in doors add graphic interest to the space.

Another fabulous handmade quilt.

I've also used a vintage Japanese obi belt as an art piece on a narrow, tall wall. There is a great variety of patterns and colours available and you can often pick them up on ebay for very little!

I used a particularly colourful Pashmina as a window treatment on a small window in a guest bath. It added just the colour boost to an ordinarily drab little room and offered lots of options for coordinating accessories.
I also used a multi-colored pashmina for my window in a room I was renting once. I couldn't paint or change anything to the room except the windows...several people commented on how nice it looked.

I LOVE SARAH'S HOUSE - I recognized that quilt right away - it's so beautiful and not too-too country! That orange and turquoise one is a real favorite of mine as well - I don't think I'd ever thought of putting those colors together before I saw that photo on houzz. Great ideabook!
