Cabana Houses
I am an architectural design writer who often focuses on how environment can affect behavior. Before consulting privately, I received my MA in writing and ran a design boutique in Los Angeles.

While watching children play in a huge city fountain, water shooting from the ground into the hot, flat air, I thought of Cabana Houses. I was settled into a bench under its connecting umbrella, my havana hat pushed low and water close at hand. I loved being near the activity but not IN the activity.
Cabana houses can take a pool area from being just a swim zone to being an entire outdoor luxury and place to spend an entire day as if we were in, say, the Mediterranean (or Cabo, or, or) itself. A place to get shade, eat, relax, socialize and--as you'll see below--even watch movies, these tropical spaces create an entire new room to our homes. Whether enormous or humble, modern or traditional: I want. I want one now.

Modern conveniences with an island vibe through the choice of roofing and other (neutral-toned) aesthetics.
A double-decker with close proximity to the water but also privacy.

Streamlined and modern take on the cabana house, merging sleek industrialism with nature (seen through lots of windows). Unusual. Gorgeous.
Here the outdoor merges with the indoors as a sheltered wing shoots off from this house.
And underneath such a wing, one gets the grown-up feel of an interior room with a summer breeze rolling through.
Simple and basic, and tucked into the corner adjacent to the pool itself.
Modern and sleek, providing a place to lounge and eat more formally.

The pool seems to be a part of this Mediterranean home itself, flowing into the casual back of the house.

The placement of this simple house reinforces the linear look.

More linear beauty flanked by trees and greenery, like some Italian estate.
The house flows into the pool that flows into a beautiful panorama.

A closer view shows that this room also becomes an outdoor theater.

A simple setup.
And when you don't have a separate cabana house? Accentuate the natural beauty of your back yard and create an outdoor room.
