Robin's Egg Blue

The color of a robin's egg –– whether it's a supersaturated Caribbean aquamarine or a dusty shade of teal –– is an incredibly versatile hue for walls, furniture, accessories and more. It lends easy elegance whether your style is trad, rustic, or retro-kitsch. Try painting a tiny alcove (or the inside of a closet) in a bright aqua shade for an enchanting jewel-box look or a grey-tinged blue with white trim for a Colonial feel. Look for vintage desk accessories or linens for a surprising pop of color in a neutral room.

My very first apartment had high ceilings, vintage chandeliers –– and a postage-stamp-size bedroom I painted in the exact hue of a Tiffany box. Black-and-white prints in inexpensive frames popped against the vibrant walls, and my hand-me-down, dark wood furniture somehow looked ten times more expensive.

I've always been drawn to this color family, but many of the ideas here can be applied to your own favorite hue. Use it bright, tone it down, mix it up, repeat it.
Inspired by nature, the color of robin's eggs can be earthy or glamorous –– it's all about context.
The vibrant countertop of this powder room is tempered with the earthy pottery, textured, neutral wall and modern cabinets.
Vintage appliances and other accessories, whether they're for function or just form, add warmth to any room. The shade of blue on the base of this old fan would be a gorgeous paint color for a bedroom wall or fabric choice for a soon-to-be-heirloom quilt.
A cool blue wall, pop art accessories, and brilliant aqua mid-century chair are a head start on style. Who says nurseries should be frilly and cloying?
Against a cool blue-green marble backsplash, the industrial elements of this modern sink have an urban Zen feel.
This eclectic vignette combines shabby chic, nautical, and classic American elements in a hodgepodge that somehow all works. The bright sky hue and the more muted blue are anchored by a neutral carpet and warm brown lampshade, while the eye is drawn to the surprising upholstery of preppy vertical stripes on a traditional wingback chair.
The wall color we glimpse through this doorway is the Tiffany-esque blue I once painted my room –– but here, juxtaposed with tropical green, polka-dot linens and kitsch accents, the effect is artsy and playful.
This welcoming sidewalk cafe in Berlin illustrates the pop factor of robin's-egg blue against anything gray. Why not paint that rusty patio set or place bright blue pots on a weathered wood porch?
I love to scout for vintage barware at flea markets and thrift shops. This geometric decanter from the late '40s shines against warm blonde wood and modern chrome chairs.
The artwork, lamps and tables in this room could read quite grandmotherly if it weren't for a clever overall design mix. The cool blue wall, modern slipcovered sofa and pops of girly pink keep the traditional elements –– and classic symmetry –– from looking too staid.
Even an entryway "landing pad" can be chic when a vivid turquoise plate (charged with the humble task of holding mail) plays off the rich wood of a modern credenza.
This stately "hearth room" is both luxurious and homey due to the mix of warm wood and buttery leather against my favorite wall color.
An old typewriter like this one can be both a quirky accessory and an analog-cool way to leave notes to other members of the household. Pick up milk, dry cleaning...and more typewriter ribbons! There are lots of online sources for vintage typewriter repair and supplies.
Back to nature once more...sort of. The regal poolside pottery echoes the sparkling water, while sleek modern furniture and greenery around the patio stones evoke casual California chic.

Kit Pollard I love the little details! And the swimming pool...maybe this is why I love water views so much...
