Designer Jamie Herzlinger Creates A Dream Desert Home
Inspired by her love of Bauhaus design and couture clothing styles from the 1940s, interior designer Jamie Herzlinger designed her home to combine these two very different styles. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Camelback Mountain foothills in the Arizona desert, Herzlinger built this home as an oasis for her and her family. "This project represents me more than any other," she says. "It's my style, my taste, and my design sensibilities."
Since she hails from a family with a rich history in the fashion industry, Herzlinger often brings styles and elements to her interior designs that are found in clothing. Luxurious textiles with tailored details, feminine accents, and bold lighting all blend to create a unique and stylish home.

"I had built a home that was very Italian before," says Herzlinger. "After I sold it, I wanted the intellectual quietude of streamlines, but with sumptuous elegant fabrics and furnishings."
This simple but luxurious breakfast nook is the perfect example of that aesthetic. Herzlinger set up the nook with a table from Holly Hunt and chairs by Michael Taylor, with a couch from Ebanista in lieu of two additional chairs. Although the space is full of light in the morning, she used a bold chandelier by Marian Jamieson for the evening.

| Herzlinger designed a large, open kitchen that would be suitable for family living. White Calacatta Luna marble was used for the kitchen counters, while the flooring is made with a durable and hard-wearing Lagos Azul limestone. A dark wenge wood with a walnut stain was used for the rich and glossy cabinetry. |

Architecturally, Herzlinger's goal was to build a home with a very open floor plan. "I wanted a home where my children and myself could truly enjoy and use every room without the usual formal floor plan of rooms that are delineated by walls," Herzlinger says. The dining, kitchen, and living spaces are all connected.
Herzlinger outfitted the elegant and bold dining spaces with a naturally shaped wood table from Hudson. Both the lucite dining chairs and the exquisite chandelier are Herzlinger's custom designs.

A velvety chaise and chair from Donghia's Geneva collection sit just inside from Herzlinger's retro-styled pool. A perfect view of the Camelback Mountain foothills is visible in the distance.

The master bathroom is one of Herzlinger's favorite rooms in her home. Built as a retreat after a long day's work, Herzlinger used elegant Bianco Carrera marble for the flooring and installed a modern free-standing tub from WET Style near one of the windows.

Custom mirrors cut with feminine curves were installed onto a mosaic wall made of Bianco Carrara marble micro-tile from Waterworks. Elegant sconces from Urban Archaeology were placed on either side of the mirrors in lieu of overhead lighting, since lighting from the side tends to be more flattering.

Around the corner in the master bathroom, the Bianco Carrera marble continues on into the shower, with an all-marble bench against one wall. Herzlinger decided to use pau ferro for the cabinetry in the bathroom — an exotic wood that's found in Brazil and Bolivia. Most often used in guitar making, pau ferro has a unique grain and coloration that can also be used in furniture.

| The master bedroom is accessed through pocket doors right outside the shower in the master bath. Herzlinger automatically gravitated towards a more neutral palette, so all of her colors have a gray undertone. Her bed frame is one of her custom creations, while the chandelier is from Donghia. |

| "I work long hours, and usually one day each weekend," Herzlinger says. "So by the time I actually retire for the evening, my bedroom is like my own private piece of Heaven!" Herzlinger custom designed a mirrored desk and lucite chair for a vanity set next to the bed frame. The flooring in this room is American Black Walnut, and is used throughout the entire home. |

A beautiful mirrored mosaic instantly lights up this bathroom. The contrast of this flashy feature with the classic subway tile and natural lines of the wood countertop adds a sense of modern glamour to the space.

Above, blue tile from Ann Sacks lines the walls of the shower. "I faced the same challenges that every homeowner faces when trying to figure out how to design their own home," says Herzlinger. "You have to consider what kind of style you want, how much space you have, and if that style will work with the location of the home and your lifestyle."
