Over the last 20 or so years there's been a resurgence in the popularity of cork floors. improvements and innovations from the cork industry are driving this popularity and the cork floors available today are of better quality and lower cost than ever.

Cork flooring is made from the bark of the cork oak tree, Quercus suber. Cork trees grow in Portugal, Spain, France, Morocco and Tunisia. Groves of cork oak preserve native habitat and prevent desertification.

Cork is an infinitely renewable material and its natural, antimicrobial properties make it an ideal flooring choice.

Once a cork oak reaches around 25 years old, its bark can be harvested for the first time. The tree isn't harmed during this harvest and it will regrow its bark, only to be harvested again in ten years. This every ten year harvest will go on for the entire 200 years of the tree's lifespan.

Historically, cork flooring was made into tiles or sheets that had to be glued down. However most cork floors today are engineered planks or large tiles. These new cork products snap together and float over a subfloor.

These advancements in cork flooring allow for faster installations and lower costs.

Cork almost always arrives with a factory finish. This finish usually involves a stain and then a resilient topcoat. That topcoat will have a warranty and has been developed to keep a new cork floor looking great for years.

Cork floors can't be refinished int he same way many wood floors can. However should they need it in time, they can have another layer of topcoat applied to them.
