I'm feeling especially like a Francophile this month! With the Tour de France going on all month and Bastille Day in a few days, not to mention my recent visit to Paris, I'm in a really French mood.

French kitchen design can be widely interpreted. Like many styles and themes, one has the option to move toward a higher level of authenticity or to define one's own interpretation. It's all good.

Within this ideabook, design details are selected which might contribute to the French kitchen style in a more authentic way. What is missing is an image of limestone. Limestone abounds in France, as I witnessed in my recent visit to (fabulous) Paris.

A mix of old and new, farmhouse and formal often (not always) defines a French kitchen. Elegant neutrals may be well suited in an elegant Parisian kitchen. Black and creme, so elegant! Bright colors are often seen in country tile, even cabinetry in a country setting. In the very chic Parisian apartment I recently stayed in, the kitchen had modern glossy red cabinetry and gray countertops, not formal and neutral colors as noted above but tres chic! A formal French kitchen might incorporate an uber stylized sense of glamour with gleaming surfaces, rich color and polished metal finishes for a distinctive and fabulous French theme.

So, a French kitchen is also about the passion for cooking! We often see cookware beautifully displayed, with wonderfully designed hoods that are an architectural element, and serious cooking stations. Perhaps stone countertops, rustic beams, and a use of concrete in modern French kitchens maintain a sense of history and elements from nature add to the feeling of permanence.

Curvilinear elements are assumed as mandatory, but that is not the case necessarily. For more decorative accents, add traditional toile at the windows and/or seat cushions, beautiful sconces and fabrics from a French fabric house. The accessories serve as an important "layer" within a French kitchen.

A kitchen with a feeling of a French country style, perhaps a bit of a French farmhouse look - beams, large curved hood, country colors with white elegance elsewhere
A grand furniture piece positioned in or near the kitchen. Why not?
An enthusiastic use of tile is a hallmark of French country kitchens!
Reflection of a breakfast area with sofa, wire chairs, formal chandelier as seen from a lovely blue mirror
Wonderful antique decorative items add lots of soul to the kitchen
Curved elements, classic details, a European country scene over the range take us abroad
An Americanized version of a Parisian style kitchen. Strong contrast, stripes, and a crisp formality define this look
Formal, neutral shades, a strong dose of glam and classic furnishings create a kitchen comfortable in a formal French home
Distressed finishes, stacked country dishes, chairs with a curve and a country motif serve as meaningful accents
A modern take on a traditional herringbone wood floor - perfect for modern French kitchens
Glamour, authenticity, gourmet cuisine awaits with La Cornue
Why not include fabulous sconces such as these in a French inspired stylish kitchen?
A French inspired storage piece. To house kitchen items or placed in an adjoining breakfast room? Yes!
A wonderful floor from Paris Ceramics and a charming pantry door with a casual hutch, this is a lived in vignette, part of a European country kitchen.

Becky Harris One of my friends was attending something that sounded hilarious this weekend - she's going to "Bastille Day" at some old prison in Philly, and they were going to storm the prison and throw Twinkies.

UPSTAGING YOUR HOMES I am a huge fan of France & all things French, I added this influence to my kitchen with use of aged sideboard instead of running counter & cupboards straight across

wolfgang80 Just a small correction--The alleged La Cornue range in the 4th photo from the bottom is a Lacanche range. It's part of a pretty incredible unorthodox kitchen.

Susan Serra, CKD matty, glad to give you some visual enjoyment! Who doesn't like Frenchy things?

becky, haha...knowing me, I'd go along to pick up the twinkies, assuming they'd be packaged!

upstaging, you have definitely put a personal stamp on your kitchen. I see glam and country, something the French do perfectly. Nice job!

apronaddiction Wow I love the French country style of kitchens! It just seems so laid back but formal at the same time.
And I have to say that the large rustic mirror and the chandelier are perfect additions to any kitchen. Those are my favs!!!

Another perfect addition to any kitchen would be an apron that is chic but sexy at the same time...

When you have a chance check out.....
