Stools are supposed to serve a function in the home. The provide extra seating for guests as well as additional seating around space-limited areas of the home such as kitchen islands. As we all know, though, form is at least as important as function. A great stool can definitely make a statement in a room.
A great stool for me is one with a unique shape. I like stools that you immediately notice when you walk into a room. I like stools that you want to look twice at because they don't just look like tall chairs but instead have a shape that is stylish and attention-getting.
Of course, sometimes the room is already so busy that a simpler stool makes more sense. Even then, choosing a stool made from unique materials or bursting with a pop of color can make the piece itself more interesting while contributing to the room instead of taking away from it.

I am currently longing for a set of jigsaw puzzle stools like these. What I want is a full set of six or eight that can be combined together into a table or separated into individual stools.
These clothespin-shaped stools are so adorable! I don't know that I like them for this space, though. In fact, what I'd love is to see them in brilliant colors for a kids' room!

The shape of this stool is so surprising that you have to look twice to appreciate it. It almost looks like the traditional chair shape (with a high back) has been inverted here. Lovely.

Although I adore many of the designs I've showcased here, I have to confess that I think stools with wide seats and supportive backs are probably more practical for the home. Despite being practical, though, they can definitely retain an interesting shape like we see here.
