Working Solutions for Shared Kids' Spaces

See how siblings of different ages and genders can share a room in style

If you have ever shared a space with someone — sibling, college roommate, spouse or partner — you are all too familiar with pleasure or displeasure of living with someone in close quarters. When I designed a shared space for my boys, I recounted my prior experiences and came up with design solution that worked for both parties involved. In this ideabook, I share those ideas and more to keep the shalom in your home.

Practice duplicity. Two bean bags provide seating for both kids to enjoy quiet time in their reading nook. When not in use, stack them in the corner or under the beds when floor space is at a premium.

No need to modify the decor when a younger child shares room with older sibling — just make needed adjustment to the furnishings. A set of antique beds are the perfect fit in this charming girls' room. Notice that bed rails (in the same color) have been added to the bed on the left to satify the needs of the junior occupant.

Even if you have enough bedrooms to give each child his or her own room, consider using one room as a shared bedroom, the other a playroom. Most children enjoy sharing a room and the added bonus of having a separate space reserved for play.

I agree with darihilbert, trundle beds are a great space saver. Extremely cute in the day bed styles too. I also happen to like the newer styled bunk bed choices w/ the full-size sleeper/futon that has drawers to take up the space under the bed to eliminate the need for two separate chest or dressers. Most rooms have closets and theirs plenty of space savor ideas for that too.

karajanee, Hello, I am just thinking: "teal" is a form of green and "aqua" a form of blue. Now, if you wanted to, you could do two trees with "teal" leaves having a wolf (partially lurking by them) and a few cubs (playing near) and "glitter" flowers. Doing the ceiling with a sun, in "glittery" sunny yellow. This idea I'm picturing is if your light fixture is in the middle of the ceiling. You can have the sun rays streak outward towards the wall using a large amount of the ceiling space, so much so that, your "aqua" sky section continues from the sun down the wall three dimensional back ground style with clouds. I'd also have you place the trees with "teal" leaves and wolf with cubs and "glitter" flowers in the foreground... Just an idea
