Inspiration from Tim Burton and Dr. Suess
I love the gothic, cartoon style of Tim Burton and movies like Coraline, and Dr. Suess is just a more colorful version. Thinking about truly making my house reminiscent of my tastes made me go searching for things that might be found in these movies. I want my home to be comfortable, of course-but why not feel like I'm walking into a fantasy land at the same time?
The first question is one of stripes-black and white stripes tend to figure prominently. Think Beetlejuice, Nightmare Before Christmas... but this can be done in such a classy way. One the floor it would just bring out the accents throughout the room...
On the couch it's a completely different beast. With the walls that beautiful Tiffany's blue it just gives it a super sophisticated look.
But here, if this were used for a small niche area it would be much more dramatic. This certainly couldn't take up much room with such small stripes, however.
Victoria Ghost Chair by Kartell - $370
Ghost chairs are so cool-and while I love the plain clear design in the last photo, I feel like a color might distort the stripes in a really interesting way.
A checkered floor, rather than stripes, is so sophisticated but sticks to that black and white. I love every picture I see of checkered floors in entryways.
The wider stripes seem to be able to take up more room without looking as busy. I'm not a fan of the floor here, though.
Bringing the stripes horizontal, or even doing a tone on tone look seems much more unexpected but just as intriguing.
A hand painted swirled room mixed with solids and some intriguing patterns-I love the idea of it, and from a distance it's stunning. I wonder what it feels like closer.
MacKenzie-Childs Courtly Check Square Hanging Lamp - $295
These lamps are ADORABLE. I feel like with these I could have a little tea party table in the corner, and carry the black and white theme from a different part of the room.
Eclectic Buffets And Sideboards
Mackenzie Childs has a striped bombay chest-but this was the closest on here to something similar, and I love it almost as much. I would love to paint older furniture with some of these dramatic patterns. Again, this could carry the theme out of the main room into a hallway.
Striped Red French Chest of Drawers - GBP 295
This is closer to what I was thinking, and these stripes are very Coraline. I love the circus and have looked into a lot of prints of vintage circus posters, which would look amazing behind this.
Seletti Trip Wardrobe - $2,250
Painting an armoire/wardrobe with these sorts of super busy patterns would mean keeping everything around it much, much simpler, but it certainly makes a statement.
Contemporary Franklin Iron Works™ Oil Rubbed Bronze Ribbon Chandelier - $399.99
I wish there were some variation to the thickness of the metal here, but something like this could probably be replicated with fun pieces of spiraling wire.
There is so much creative furniture out there that follows this look, but so little of it is widely available. This bench is perfect for in front of a window and it looks so comfortable.
Cabinet No. 5 - $2,960
These bookcase and drawer designs are amazing. They are so unexpected and just give a great whimsical feel. Plus, think of the difference between this and a normal shelf in front of a striped wall- the silhouette would be a remarkable difference.
I think these cute little drawers could be made from other repurposed drawers-add longer legs to an old side table and immediately you have something funky and different. I can imagine one of these just below eye height with a neat vase or jug underneath.
This table is so stunning. The edges remind me of a burned page, and, well, I love pink. This could be my tea party table with a bunch of cushions propped up around it.
Mad Hatter Porcelain Collection - $231.66
Some little touches need to be added-a tea table feels necessary, bringing in a touch of Alice in Wonderland. A black and white striped tea set with these would be perfect.
Hoffmann Mocha Service
Like this. This tea set is adorable-if much more expensive than I would go for. I love the stripes, but I also like the checkered Mackenzie Childs set.
Harbe Bestow Hand Hook - $75
I wonder if this comes in a left and a right hand? Even so, this protruding from a white stripe on the wall would look so interesting.
These chandeliers are nothing short of amazing. I'm desperately in love. They come in a variety of sizes and colors to really bring it to the center of attention, and who wouldn't want to start a conversation about it?
This mirror, especially in such a dramatic red, would look amazing on a striped wall. It reminds me of wearing red pumps with a little black dress.
Shadowly Chaise Lounge By Tord Boontje For Moroso Of Italy - $2,409
All of Moroso's chairs are so unique. This one, while I would prefer it in a different color, is so unique and I imagine everyone would want to sit in it at least once.
Moroso The Big Easy - $1,911
This chair comes in an upholstered version as well. I love the shape-it's so unique.
Los Muebles Amorosos - $7,072
This one is super cool too-the pattern is amazing and I love the asymmetry.
Mad Hatter Host Chair - $448.20
This chair IS exactly what the mad hatter would use. Whoever gets the extra tall chair will almost certainly feel like the most important person in the room-although it would look just as neat in the living room as in the dining room.
Yuman Mod Alicia Tall Side Chair - $458.80
These chairs are very simple and elegant, but give the same super high statement.
Deluxe Upgraded Tommy's Turbo Terrace - $14,075
Wouldn't it be fun to have the outside of a real house look like this? ;)
