Houzz Tour: Eclectic and Colorful in Colorado
Beautifully curated interior design showcases a sparkling mix of old and new
The most comfortable homes are the ones that feel lived in. Even the most intense fans of minimalism can admit it's hard to imagine a cozy night in when your living room is a spotless plane of black and white. In this Cherry Hills Village, Colorado home, designer Andrea Schumacher decided to focus her design on her clients' collection of art and antiques. "It became a really great mix of old meets new," Schumacher says. "There's colorful art, tasteful antiques, and sophisticated accessories."
Schumacher worked with the architects to use materials and styles that would blend with the interior design. "The clients love that eclectic, traveled look," says Schumacher. "Since many of the pieces in the house were their own, it already had that almost-Old-World look."

| The living room color palette was based on the blue, orange and green hues of the custom drapery. After falling in love with the fabric, Schumacher and her client decided to base the rest of the living room around this organic looking textile. Two couches and several armchairs provide ample seating for the family and guests. Since living room is so large, finding a coffee table that would marry the space with the couches and armchairs was a challenge. At the last minute, they found a large enough table from a high-end furniture store in New York. Coffee table: Moura Starr Drapes: Hot House Flowers by Celerie Kemble at F. | Schumacher wanted the design to focus on the homeowners' antique furniture and art collection. In this bar and lounge area next to the entryway, she created a welcoming space for guests with a custom bar and beautifully worn leather sofa. | Although its design is bold, the dining room is actually a very informal space. Schumacher and her clients purposely designed this space as a place where the family could just hang out, without being holed up in their own rooms. Schumacher upholstered a bench in a classic David Hicks pattern for comfy seating on one side of the table, and used two of the clients' arm chairs at either end. Other chairs one of the homeowners found were painted a brilliant burgundy for more seating. | The clients knew right off the bat they didn't want their home to have yet another all-white kitchen. Although some of the cabinetry is white and white Calcutta marble was installed on the countertops and stove backsplash, Schumacher decided to use the island and wall space to implement bold color. The wallpaper is a custom, hand-painted work of art from Stark. It took almost a year for Schumacher to get the wallpaper, which was hand-painted on silk in China. After the wallpaper was installed, Schumacher had it sealed with Proseal, which allows the wallpaper to act as a backsplash. "You can throw spaghetti at it and it'll clean right off," she says. Countertops: Calacatta Marble Barstools: previously owned by client Paint color on island: Cat's Eye by Benjamin Moore |
The wood used for the island countertop will patina beautifully with use. Dark wood floors draw the eye to the custom white cabinetry and built-in refrigerator. Schumacher decided to use traditional-style chandeliers for the island lighting, which adds a great eclectic touch.

| This cozy library and media room is one of the homeowners' favorite rooms. Most of this furniture belonged to them already, which gives the room a comfortable, broken-in feel. The soft lighting and plush carpeting make it the perfect space to watch movies or curl up with a book on the soft leather chaise. |
The comfortable and soothing master bedroom is a great example of Schumacher's go-to color palette. "My style typically starts with a neutral backdrop," she says. "Then I like to accessorize with pops of color in the art and textiles."

A mid-century styled vanity was chosen for one of the home's powder rooms. Schumacher used a bold lattice-like wallpaper in a neutral charcoal and white palette to accent the walls. Like much of the house, this room doesn't necessarily have a look that "goes together," but it still works in a very unique and personal way.

Both of the clients love to travel, so many aspects of the home were inspired by their favorite destinations. Moroccan-shaped tiles line the shower in the master bathroom. Although the floors are radiant heated, a lush carpet gives the room a more lived-in feel.

| A luxurious freestanding tub stands at the other end of the master bathroom. Blue, Morrocan-like draperies offset the same honey colored grasscloth used in the living room. The fireplace makes this area the perfect place to relax on a crisp fall day, and the oyster surround adds an extra high-end touch. Joe Falco Nice job. One small correction: It is Calacatta marble. No such thing as Calcutta marble.

Sharon Barnard I haven't seen wallpaper in a kitchen since the 50's...guess it all comes around again! Designers must satisfy their clients, however..first priority.

linmarie The dining room is reminiscent of Kelly Wearstler's dining room in her Doheny Estate, perhaps an homage if you will?

Joanne Fairmont Yinger I agree with Becky. The powder room is my favorite, although several of the spaces exude a rich subtly. A successful exercise in uncluttered traditional elegance.

newmouse I love the use of white - either in upholstery, bedding, cabinetry, etc - to balance the patterns and color. I do wonder how dinner parties work if one side of the table is seated together on a bench, albeit a beautiful one.

ruffslitch Yeah, all I want to know is what do the owners do for a living? How rich do you have to be to be able to indulge in good taste? KWIM?

10wildacres I don't think I'd ever move from the lovely seating area in the first photo! Exposed brick, colorful pillows and a wonderful view! Love the use of bright carpets and the neutral backgrounds. Not what most could afford, but certainly inspiration!
