Adding "soul" to a kitchen interior is the most personal of design missions. It's personal, it's subjective, it's very definition is different for everyone. But, if nothing else, it's a good word to think about in connection with our kitchens, as this awareness alone brings us one step closer toward a meaningful environment.
Some simple paths toward a soulful interior might be:
Personal Style - Very simply, express yourself. Do it in color, form, accessories, artwork, whatever "speaks" to you. That's the thing...when something speaks to you, you feel it. Wait for that feeling and in the meantime, be patient, change around ideas and concepts until you feel the spark. It will come.
Windows - I strongly feel that windows have awesome power! What I find very interesting is the interplay of super sleek interiors and oversized windows. We see nature in its rough cut glory, juxtaposed with man made, perfect, elements. To my eye, always soulful.
Shapes and Forms - Playing with shapes and forms as well as scale to one's personal aesthetic adds just that...an individual design statement. Don't worry too much about rules...what's most important is that you put your mind into a sort of "freeform" mode, which many designers do.
If you look at any of these kitchens and say "that one is completely soul-less", well, that's good! It's a movement toward putting the puzzle pieces together for your own kitchen that truly speak to you. These are just a very few pieces that might add soul to our kitchens. What are the pieces for you that add soul?
