Fashion-wise, I've never been much of an "outfit" person, and I feel the same way about my home decor. My favorite rooms are ones that are made from a bunch of individual pieces that are cool on their own, but amazing together.
Achieving that kind of style can be difficult, though - there's a fine line between just enough variety and flea market craziness.
Which is why it's a good idea to start slow with this kind of decorating - and the dining room is the perfect inaugural spot. Since dining room furniture is usually limited to a table, chairs and maybe one or two additional pieces, it's easy to manage. And there's really no easier way to start out with eclectic style than by mixing and matching the chairs around the dining room table.
Unsurprisingly, there's no one right way to do this mixing, but here are some great examples of how the look can work:

I love this long table and open space - the big room is the perfect environment for a collection of chairs that's all over the place - no two are alike.

As a general rule, I try to avoid adding trendy stuff to my home - unless it's a trend I like enough that I won't care if its passe or not. For me, that's the case here.
I think there's a difference, too, between mixing chairs and those sink bowls - mostly because I sort of feel like if you see one bowl sink, you've seen them all, but there are a lot of ways to make the chairs work...
