Mighty, Mighty: Celebrating the Brick House

Like a lot of people, I grew up in a house that was brick on the outside, with a brick fireplace. In college, all the dorms I lived in were brick (along with most of the classroom buildings). And after college, I moved into a brick rowhouse in downtown Baltimore - one that had been renovated, so we had one entire wall of exposed brick inside.

I like brick.

It's solid, it's durable, and it works in spaces that range from country traditional to urban and modern. Plus, though I usually think about brick as an exterior material, my history has shown that it works all over the house.

So, with that, here's my ode to the brick house , in all its forms:
I love that this builder left the chimney exposed in this small attic room.
Brick is a traditional patio material and a good one. I love the way it looks as it ages.
It's so pretty when just a little grass peeks through between the bricks.
Brick makes this garden gate appear solid and serious.
This ceiling, with its brick and beams, is fabulous.
This bedroom has a great urban look - brick walls create a fantastic backdrop for big art.
Speaking of urban, this loft's exposed brick is one element of an amazing interior.
Brick fireplaces are great and so are outdoor fireplaces, so it follows that brick outdoor fireplaces would be fantastic...but you don't see a lot of them. I like it.
I love this fireplace, painted a deep, dark color. Though some people hesitate to paint brick, I usually love the way it ends up looking - especially on fireplaces.
In this room, painting the brick lightens up the whole space.
This might actually be my favorite example of painted brick - I love this color!
The wall around this garden reminds me of my college - I think it's gorgeous.
Brick is so beautiful as it weathers. I just love the way the color fades a bit - and I love how it works with this bright blue door.

kimp1979 Funny to find this ideabook about brick...I am looking online everyone trying to find pictures of painted brick houses. We live in a brick house but it is a ugly terra cotta color and it just doesn't go with my style. I am not having much luck.

ArtisticBlend Designs Very nice! I just love interior brick walls. That brick patio with the grass peeking through is amazing too. Thanks for sharing.

uttara and adwait bricks... probably one of the oldest building materials, besides wood, that is used after so many centuries.

j r Have to ask if you went to W&M? My dad and I had a standard joke about that beautiful campus, my alma mater: what was the first building in Williamsburg? The brick maker. I love brick buildings with charming wooden appendages - steps, porches, mudrooms.

Kit Pollard Janetreuther - yes, I DID go to W&M! What a small world - class of '96! While I was there, I lived in Monroe and in a lodge, and those are the spots I was really thinking about. (Plus, I grew up in Annapolis, so I moved from one colonial town to another.)

jboon W&M '91 also Monroe hall. I remember no ac very well. I found this site looking for brick ideas. We are building in Gainesville Florida and plan on going anti mediterranian with a white brick colonial!

Kit Pollard Funny! I lived in the 3rd floor triple in Monroe. August move-in is HOT.

Love the traditional white brick in FL!

macsea Just love brick. Solid and with texture to generate these emotive qualities mentioned above. Just moved to the US from Europe where building with brick is fairly standard. Can you build or renovate here with good old brick?

josephinetalepeddler I am a big fan of brick We recently exposed all the brick in our terrace both interior and exterior and very happy. It added instant history and charm to our house.

housepeepers I struggled for years thinking about painting my ugly 70s brick fireplace. Once I finally painted it white it was an instant facelift for the whole room! What took me so long?

cookingchick A very timely piece. I just painted my brick fireplace hearth and surround yesterday! The fireplace was just too dark for an interior room...now it's painted the same cream color as the mantel and it really brightens up the room.

We have brick in our kitchen as well but we're leaving that natural...it's a beautiful contrast to the sleek granite countertops and black appliances.

kiole My husband is a brick/stone mason, we're in the middle of building a house and I've been fighting him every step of the way because he wants to put a large brick wall up inside of the house. Now after seeing all of these beautiful picture I think I may just change my mind... Thanks!!

captured_by_love I LOVE painted brick.... that was the first thing I did to our fireplace when we moved into our new (to us) house! I love how it looks when weathered outside!

Allison Cosmos Thank you for featuring the mural I painted on the ceiling of a dining room. What's amazing about this project is that it started out as a plain flat white ceiling! Even the beams are faux! I think this kind of mural would also look fantastic in a wine cellar!
