English Bucolic Chic

I am an architectural design writer who often focuses on how environment can affect behavior. Before consulting privately, I received my MA in writing and ran a design boutique in Los Angeles.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure I made this jumbled phrase up. To me it describes the quaint and light simplicity of an English country house, with a touch of sleek and chic. Think Jane Austen made modern.

Rather than the layers of history and decor of a manor house on a landed estate, country cottages came with less . . . stuff. Tenants moved in and out and brought with them an amount able to transport easily by coach. Ah, the simplicity. The sweeping romanticism of living with less, in style.

Take nots on the English Bucolic Chic look:
lots of white
simple lines in furniture
layers of white, cream, and neutral textiles
metal and other modern materials mixed in
simple sculpture and wall art
small, highly functional kitchens
larger-scale dining rooms for everyday eating
plants
good use of natural light
cozy corners for cuddling up
the "sitting room" with space for guests
china and pewter and details
boudoir dressing table
a writing desk
Modern touches such as these chairs and lighting blending in with the light and simple white of this open kitchen.
Like English cottages, this narrow staircase is simple and leads up to an understated but distinct sculpture display. Sleek and almost artistic in its sharp smooth design--so modern.
A spanning sitting room with many pieces, yet staying clear of clutter.
The wall color retains the breezy freshness while adding subtle detail and contrast.
Modern details in this traditional bedroom. The shapes and details add interest to the pleasantly neutral color palate.
A long and sleek and modern take on a sitting/play area. The small furniture and seating options are both perfect for kids and blend stylishly into the overall space.
Regal and dynamic without being too flashy or colorful.
Such a pleasant sitting area with books and art and a work surface. Beautiful uncomplicated style.
Of course kitchens were behind the scenes, and pantries were small and stocked for efficient and simple use.
A small but useful kitchen, economic in its use of space with vertical storage.
An open breakfast/dining area for gathering as a family and enjoying morning breakfast and tea, at all ages. If only we all employed a cook . . .
Elegant in shape and color choice, creating a grandness in a smaller space.
Keep to simple, time-appropriate details such as silver and pewter.
The dining space and china display flow together, with an arresting splash of color.
A simple and elegant boudoir dressing table. Very feminine without frilly touches. Straight-forward and chic.
Of course English bucolic chic includes a Jane Austen-esque writing desk, preferably in a central location for writing enduring novels as daily life moves around you.

keob I think you just solved all my problems! I live in an early 1930's house with bits and pieces of English country, colonial revival, cottage, and Craftsman all thrown together - my head spins. Yes, bucolic, not crazy! Thank you!
