Fireplaces are and always been a hot commodity, and the demand of modern convenience has birthed various alternatives to the wood-burning design. Yet, there is one element that keeps many faithful and true to the original, wood-burning fireplace: wooden logs.
The presence of firewood immediately evoke feelings of warmth, comfort, and appreciation for nature and her bountiful supply. When cut and stacked vertically or horizontally, wood effortlessly takes on a sculptural appearance often taken for granted. Instead of storing logs outdoors, they now are being stored in convenient wall nooks that display their natural beauty.

Pangaea Interior Design, Portland, OR When I remodel my fireplace surround, I will be including a good sized nook for storing wood inside. It will be either concrete or metal to avoid allowing wood-eating carpenter ants to get started. In the winter when it is rainy outside, it is so nice to have an ample supply of wood that is nice and dry without having to scamper out in the rain to get more. These look great!

Michael Tauber Architecture You can also locate niches for fire wood in adjoining spaces..as I did for a new entry to home in Sonoma CA. The advantage for this client was space, access to chopping of the wood and as you mentioned the beauty the wood provided at the entry.

dancingfish As someone who heated my home with wood for over a decade I can tell you these pictures look lovely but in real life wood is messy & dirty--keeping it above the fireplace in a white painted space like photo number one seriously made me laugh. A much better solution is to have an outdoor box with the ability to pass it through to the indoors.

kaylee32 I love the pictures and have a perfect place right next to my fireplace that I want to turn into wood storage. I am worried about insects though and am wondering what I should line the interior with to keep them out? Currently it has a wood bottom and the sides are brick. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)
