The sink's previous location determined the layout of the space, since the homeowners wanted to avoid moving any plumbing. They also wanted to have a clear view of the backyard when doing dishes.
A French armoire adds storage for mugs and cookware. "It's a refreshing departure from just doing all cabinets," Arendsen says.

The previously tiny dining room that was attached to the kitchen is now a cozy nook and bar area that seats 16 people. The custom tables have removable glass tops so the family can rotate in various design patterns underneath.
The zinc and leather benches were added with the growing children in mind. Wear and tear over time will add character to the materials.
