Shields & Company Interiors
While searching through my ever-changing pile of stuff that I love and want to use, I unearthed some pictures of fabulous clocks that I had tucked into a folder. These are clocks created for today's contemporary living, where everything is fast-paced and cutting-edge. No more ordinary ticktock here, just sleek, chic and modern designs made with "out of this world" in mind. I think you will get where I'm coming from when you gaze upon these wonderful creations. Recycled Sanyo Turntable Clock by Pixel This
Grab an old Sanyo turntable, put an old LP record on it and install some clock hardware inside. Voilà! You are ready to tell time in a super retro-hip way. You have got to agree that this clever contraption would make a great gift for someone who has a major record collection.
Whatever Clock - $38
Who needs numbers when you have that old faithful intuition? And the "WhatEver!" statement says it all. This would be a fun house gift for the friend who is never on time.
Simplicity is the key here. Who says a cuckoo clock has to be made of ornately carved mahogany wood and look like a Swiss bird house? For you modern-day bird lovers, this is the perfect clock for a kitchen or family room. I love the bright color banding around the sides.
Low Cost Cuckoo Clock
OK, so you hate cuckoos. Too much maintenance turning them off when they drive you crazy, and then back on to show off to company. This mimicry of a traditional clock is laser cut and sans bird. It has all the look and color you'll need for any room. Personally, I like the orange.
Tic Magnetic Clock
Totally free your mind of any old concepts about clocks. This one is composed of a magnetic circle and individual magnets — the tiny clock being one of them. They can be rearranged as your creative side desires, or used to tack up messages or post your favorite photos. This will definitely replace the ol' refrigerator for magnet heaven and note leaving. I think it is just so very clever and practical at the same time.
Palo Samko is one of my favorite woodworkers, and he has always been totally fascinated by clocks. This one is aptly named "Dalí's Clock" after the drippy clocks Salvador Dalí painted. I once saw a whole wall of these in different sizes at a design exhibit, and it was beyond dramatic.
Tutu Clock, Red - $450
I guess big cuckoo birds are out and small cuckoo birds are in. This Tutu clock (cute name, no?) looks quite simple, but it has all sorts of modern controls to make your relationship with the cuckoo more tolerable — meaning that light-sensitive elements turn this fine feathered friend off at night! Hang this one any place you want a splash of color and a sweet little friend to help you tell time.
If You are Neutral Large Wall Clock - $40
This large wall clock features the face of Desmond Tutu, the Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1984, and his words of wisdom, "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor." It can make for lively political discussions or thoughtful meditation about the state of the world today.
Six Digit Nixie Tube Clock, 'Insolito Orologio' by Electronico Designs - $239.95
This clock is composed of six Nixie tubes that were made in Russia in the 1970s. Its quirkiness is charming, especially when you read up on the history of Nixie tubes in manufacturing. I love the retro/modern tech combo and the way the date and time are displayed. I'd buy this in a heartbeat!
Clock for an Architect
This clock is a one of a kind created by the artist Daniel Weil for an architect who commissioned him for the piece. Its simplicity and complexity at the same time is what makes it so interesting to me.
RND Time - EUR 177.50
This clock is not for those of you who are highly structured. I think it would look so great in a den or child's room. It probably would get your child interested in the concept of telling time and being on time, two good things.
Skallop Clock, Purple and Orange Gradient - EUR 268.40
The Skallop clock by designer Karim Rashid is a primary example of modern clock chic. Its lack of numbers and soft coloration make it a classic in the world of design.
Blow Up Wall Clock - $275
The very talented and famous Campana Brothers from Brazil designed this contemporary clock with of steel and other metals. It is a great example of their broad range of design talents and the perfect way to get a little bit of the Campana Brothers into your house without spending a fortune.
24 Hour Sentence Maker Wall Clock
I think we could all use a clock like this to get us through the 24 hours of the day. The object is to have 24 daily thoughts using the words on the clock as inspiration. A little positive thinking every now and then never hurt anyone.
Re Vinyl Clock, Tallinn - EUR 41
This clock is all about sustainability and recycling — I love its "green" value. It is crafted out of old vinyl records and deserves a gold star for ingenuity.
Word Puzzle Clock - $28
If you are a New York Times crossword puzzle nut like I am, this would be the perfect clock to hang on your wall. The words filled in on the puzzle are the numbers of the hours.
Umbra Take 5 Wall Clock - $50
This clock takes simplicity to an extreme. I'm not quite sure what the "5" stands for, except perhaps its placement on the clock works well with the design. It's funny how one number can suffice for telling time.
Punto Wall Clock
The Punto wall clock gives new meaning to the pendulum clock. Gone are all of the frills and packaging; left are the essentials and excellent time telling. This baby goes into the A+ designer category for me.
Cris Wall Clock
The Cris wall clock is another example of clock minimalism. It's just perfect for today's contemporary homes. Its edginess and simplicity are all I would need in my home.
Atomic Clock and Sign Art
You don't have to live in Palm Springs to hang this stunning clock in your house. I think it would be a conversation piece that you would be proud of. The look is so true to the midcentury modern genre that everyone would think it is an original antique.
Atomic Metal Clock Sculpture CL-A-02
The designer behind these originals is Steve Cambronne (aka Stevetomic), and I think he has really gotten the essence of California midcentury modernism down pat.
Metal Wall Clock Sculpture - $625
The metal artist Joseph Ferris has designed some pretty hip clocks that commingle the beauty of his craftsmanship and the utility of a clock. What's great about this is that you get both a piece of art for your walls and a timepiece.
Danish Modern Teakwood Grandfather Clock
I had to add an antique into the mix. It just seems to fit in perfectly, as it is so atypical of grandfather clocks. This one is a sexy Danish modern lovely that comes with storage down below. Sleek and contemporary, it would look terrific in a living room or entryway. I adore its simplicity.
