Raised Garden Beds- Raising The Bar
Raised garden beds are not new. They are, however, surging in popularity. The "urban homesteader" movement is making it totally acceptable to have a yard full of function- and form be darned!
In cities like Portland, OR you see cedar beds bursting with vegetables. And you don't have to go into someone's backyard to see them. Raised beds are now front and center- in front yards and even parking strips!
I think it's time to recognize that raised planters are here to stay. Some communities are arguing about where they can be built. Why don't we just decide how they should look? If everyone agrees not to build ugly ones, we should be good. Right?
Here are some great examples to get everyone thinking. These fantastic beds can work with any landscape!
Now for something completely different! Concrete block, coated with stucco and topped with a heavy tile cap makes up these substantial beds.
This wooden bed is sleek and modern. All the support is on the inside, creating a buttoned up bed that could grace even a traditional landscape.
Not stone this time but concrete pavers. There are so many ways you can do beds with this material. The weight and clean lines make these a welcome addition to most front yards.
Another stone raised bed, but a different style. The use of larger stones means these beds need space, but are easier to construct. Just about anyone could tackle this style. You could even integrate a few boulders to blur the lines between garden and landscape.
Stone beds like these will certainly take a bite out of your wallet. But they are beautiful, will last forever, and really slash your kale budget!
Core-ten steel beds are a great solution for a modern landscape. Can you imagine the neighbors complaining about these? I don't think so.
There is nothing too fancy with these garden beds. They illustrate very well that a few extra details can "raise the bar". The cap, specifically, helps these beds shine. Yes, it is nice to kneel or sit on while working. Just as importantly it gives these beds a finished look and feel.
