After reading Simplicity Parenting recently, I streamlined my children's toys, and that process bled into other rooms and aspects of our lives. Though minimalism is often designated as a design style, minimalizing and simplifying can be done in any space and to fit any need and aesthetic.
Minimalism can mean having just as much stuff but creating streamlined systems and places for everything creates a calmer atmosphere and a better flow. Yeah, in my own home with my children, and in homes of other families whose toys and systems I've worked with: good design can affect behavior.
Here are some rooms that exhibit, in all styles, minimalism exhibited with beauty.

Though this living room has a variety of furniture and a good library collection, the color is kept simple, and "decor" eliminated to create a simple but cozy living room.
Even homes with toys can keep clutter at bay by creating systems that not only help children get toys out but put them away on their own. Think less in terms of a mass of toys, and more in terms of distinct bins of play materials, such as blocks, etc.
