One downside of our rental apartment's bathroom: no medicine cabinet or vanity space. Essentially, no built-in storage. And new tile stretches from floor to ceiling, so I can't mount a cabinet or shelving into the walls. Since I'm far from being a minimalist when it comes to lotions and creams, I needed to create some kind of storage solution. I decided to make use of the space below the counter. I had a couple vintage wooden crates that turned out to be the perfect size to stack and roll under the counter. Problem solved!

One large vintage wooden crate houses all the big and bulky toiletries. I love that I can finally stow away all those bottles (and my collection of cosmetics bags) so the counter isn't cluttered with grooming products.

I needed to add wheels to the bottom of the crate, both to protect the tile and make it easier to slide the crate out from under the counter.

Super-easy DIY project: First, I picked up a set of casters from my hardware store. Then I drilled pilot holes to keep the wood from splitting. Screw in the casters and you're set!

I placed a shallow wood crate on top of the wheeled crate to act as a tray top and to neatly hide the toiletries below.

I keep some small bathroom supplies in this crate (extra contacts, Q-tips) and it's the perfect spot for a few magazines.

The storage system works well for us. I found the vintage crates in Maine for $20 and spent $5 on the casters, which made it an affordable custom solution for our bathroom.

I also think the vintage wooden crates add a little personality to the space — a nice mix of old and new.

This is good to know. Right now I have a cart in my bathroom but there's room going to waste underneath where one of these crates would fit perfectly! Adding to my project list now.
