traditional powder room by Veranda Estate Homes & Interiors
Bathrooms have traditionally been a popular room for wainscoting. Sometimes, it can be tricky telling if a wall has actual wainscoting or not. You can also get the look by adding picture molding to the wall, along with a chair rail. Then paint the lower half of the wall and molding all one color.

Using a half wall on one side of a hallway creates the feeling of an open space while still delineating travel paths through the house

For a unified look, use mosaic tile which matches the rest of the bath tile. Most tiles are available in various sizes for this purpose. Here, 2" x 2" creamy travertine does the job.

When designing dining rooms with recessed serving buffet alcoves, consider bringing in texture with masonry. The niche space is already there — why not dress it up with line, texture and color of natural, timeless stone?

Just keep in mind, especially if you want to do it yourself, first you need to install moisture-resistant backer board to the wall before installing the tile. This involves a saw, which means I simply whip out my checkbook, write my tile guy a check, then take off to the mountains until it's done

Blue is a restful color for the bedroom. In this master, soft blues and barely there browns create a calm, neutral palette that soothes after a long day

With these neutral walls, this space is elegant, simple and understated.

This is an example of monochromatic, or tone-on-tone, color scheme. A monochromatic color scheme takes a single color, or hue, and runs through several of its tints, tones and shades

These stormy blue walls can calm as just as much as the yellow ochre can pull — much like a collection of yellow buttercups far across the field. These rich tones have a way of agreeing with each other and seem to live in harmony rather than compete.

Highlight a key accent piece. The deep tone on the textured walls and dark drapery make for a beautiful backdrop for this silver-leafed dresser. The block table lamp and modern art above the dresser enhance the importance of this piece by strengthening its graceful curves.

Tone down the traditional. The traditional nature of this dining room is visible in nearly every piece of this room, from the chairs to sideboard and chandelier. The gold and silver finish of the large over-the-top mirror pulls all the traditional pieces together while adding a bit of whimsy. If this mirror had been covered only in gold leaf it would have been more traditional and too much for the room.

wainscoting gives this entry a sophisticated feel. This look is just as easily at home in a country cottage as it is in this traditional home.

Paneling in this entry stops before it reaches the ceiling, almost reading as an exaggerated wainscoting. Pale lilac walls and a touch of turquoise enhance this room beautifully.

wainscoting, my preference is for styles that end above the midpoint of a wall.

Tip: When installing wainscoting avoid having the top edge end at the midpoint of the wall, which would result in a static look.

iridescent accent tiles are used in two horizontal stripes and on the shower floor. This heightens our perception of the stall's depth and width.

Natural elements work as functional sculpture. In this modern space, the tree root base adds an interesting texture and shape, especially against the highly geometric pattern on the area rug. If you're going to use a table with an unusual shape or pattern, consider how it plays off other patterns and materials used in the space.

This room is a perfect example of coastal transitional. It has the blue and white striped rug, a pelican painting, shells on a contained trayscape.

6. Create a nook. When you have limited floor space, focus on the wall. Cabinet nooks can be recessed in between two wall studs or surface mounted to create a custom look for less.
