loft railing and trim
no railing, shelf at head, head at short side. I could have no railing in the room, paint/trim the whole vertical edge in white woodwork (not in combination with head at short end). If I put the head at the short end, I think I'd want a solid wall behind it, but then there'd be no way to get the mattress up there. I think this can only be considered if we can drop the floor considerably, and even then, I think shelves at the head would be ruled out and there would be no room for any side table/shelves at that end with the ladder coming up there, so I don't think it will work.
railing trim, shelves at head, wall light This is what I originally had in mind for the half wall into the hall and maybe into the dining room. I thought we could maybe do the narrow shelves like this at end of the bed, back to the room, but then we'd have the problem again getting the mattress up there. So I think the shelves idea is kind of out unless we just do it over the bed like the dark bunk bed picture.
interior window? minimal railing
