The console table. With a narrow and high profile, this piece fits nicely in a small entry. It works great as a base for a mirror and lamp and perfectly behind a sofa. A console table that is 33 to 35 inches high is ideal for placement behind a sofa.
The ottoman. I'm a big fan of an ottoman in lieu of a coffee table, especially in the family room — no guilt about putting up your feet here. If the need should arise for a hard surface for flowers, drinks or accessories, just throw on a tray.
The bench. There is always a place for a bench. My favorite place is in front of a bed, where it can be seating or hold clothes. Visually, I just love the way a bench anchors the bed. That same bench will work wonderfully in an entry or behind a sofa. It can also work as a coffee table, which is a bonus if you have a small space.
The chest of drawers. Dressers aren't just for bedrooms anymore. Consider that bedroom piece out in the entry — you can still use the drawers to stash away all your treasures. Need a vanity for your powder room? You can add plumbing to create an elegant statement piece.
Start with the art. One large piece, about two-thirds the size of the mantel itself, will get you almost all the way there. Then layer on additional elements in smaller sizes, ideally in complementary colors or themes.
