Use Draperies to Warm Up Your Rooms for Winter
Window coverings in rich colors and textures turn your space into a cozy retreat for fall and winter

In some homes, it’s common practice to swap out the drapery in accordance with the season. Lightweight and sheer draperies welcome the sun and warm breezes during the spring and summer months. Come fall and winter, heavier fabrics protect against cool air. I personally don’t do this, mainly due to lack of storage and budget, but the thought of “winterizing” the home in this fashion sounds cozy. Plus, it’s always fun to change things up. But whether you're changing your drapery for the season or simply looking for a change, the following photos showcase some great options.

Nothing warms up a space like big, dramatic drapes. Try layering two different types of fabric to play up the warmth even more through loads of texture.

Don’t feel like your drapes need to stop right at the floor. Letting them pile up a bit at the bottom showcases their thickness in a relaxed fashion.
Consider emulating the season’s colors. These orange and brown shades are a perfect match for fall.

Windows aren’t the only places that are worthy of drapes. Feel free to hang them liberally across a wall. Texture equals warmth, and this look comes with loads of texture.

Are there windows behind those drapes? Who knows! But how inviting does that bed look with the wall of drapery behind it?

Don’t think winter-appropriate drapes can’t be white. It really depends the weight of the fabric: As long as it's heavy and generally opaque, you’ll achieve the right look.

Consider mixing shades with your drapes. Functionally, the shades will block even more cold outdoor air. Aesthetically, they add an extra punch of drama to your windows.

It's the same idea as before, but this time with thicker fabric shades and scrumptious deep-gold drapes.

If drapes and shades are too much, consider adding a valance. Not to sound like a broken record, but more texture equals more warmth!

Without a doubt, velvet draperies instantly pass the cool-weather–appropriate test. They’re heavy, opaque and über cozy, especially when they come in deep colors like this rich navy. I can picture myself enjoying a hot chocolate or two in this room!

smaroulis Make sure you don't order drapes from Dreamdrapes.com- terrible customer service & expect to wait 4 months for your drapes & receive them damaged!

lindseynader What is the best way to steam/care for drapes? I have so many that need some attention...are there professionals who do this sort of thing?

adams interiors The gold drapes are scrumptious! I love the contrast of the rich silk over the less formal roman shades. I've done a similar project for a client where we hung inexpensive bamboo shades with very opulent red silk panels and the outcome was sooooo beautiful. BTW - I've used dreamdrapes.com for quite a few projects and was always pleased with their customer service. I only had to wait longer than normal on one occasion when a color I wanted was on back order, other than that, their quality is fantastic for the price.

adams interiors @lindseynader - You can have most drapes dry cleaned. Just use a good drycleaner especially if they are silk.
