Guest Picks: Cute and Clever Egg Cups
Keep soft-boiled eggs stable and in style with an egg cup for every personality
I'm a writer who ended up making lots and lots of cookies. I was a cookie decorator at a shop for almost ten years. I published a cookbook on cookie decorating in 2007, "Cookie Sensations." My second cookbook, "Sugarlicious," was published in early 2012 and is all about decorated cookies, cupcakes, marshmallows, and other crafty sweets, much like I offer on my blog, "the decorated cookie." http://www.thedecoratedcookie.com I'm also the Edible Crafts editor at http://www.ediblecrafts.craftgossip.com. I have an MFA in Literature and an MA in Liberal Arts. I live in Washington, DC with my husband, two daughters and three cats, and we're slowly fixing up our 85-year-old house.

I know little of the history of the egg cup, a gap in knowledge I'd like rectified given the breadth of egg cup cleverness that exists. The egg cup just doesn't have a strong presence here in the States, certainly not the honor it receives elsewhere, like in England. We like our hard-boiled eggs. They're easy to crack open and eat when cold, with no need for a place to rest them. But soft-boiled eggs with the accompanying toast soldiers are rarer on the breakfast table. What a shame that is. My mom grew up with her eggs and soldiers, and we always had egg cups in the cupboard, so I have a bit of a fondness for them. I have a few myself, but none as awesome as these collected here. — Meaghan from The Decorated Cookie
Egg Cup Soldier, Spoon and Toast Cutter Set - $11.99
Why do I love these so? They take the egg and toast soldier thing and run with it: soldier egg cups and even soldier cutters for your toast.

Don't worry, if cows aren't your thing, they come in pig shapes too.

I've seen the colorful coffee cup version of this rainbow stack, but these egg cups have those beat.

These VW vans are a fine example of the unique egg cup designs out there.

I find the idea of an entire board devoted to a soft-boiled egg and its accompanying toast so utterly charming.
Bunny Egg Cups - $7.96
Clearly seasonal with the playful bunnies, these still have a great vintage feel that I love. I'd use them the whole year through.

I won't be my neurotic self and note the difference between fried eggs and soft-boiled eggs and suggest there's a disconnect here — but only because the plate part is handy for the toast.
Egg Cup and Soldiers Breakfast Train - $105.17
So this egg cup and soldiers train is very pricey, but it's oh-so-lovely, so I had to include it.
The World's First Flat Egg Cup - $16.18
However, the same shop has a ridiculous number of more affordable egg cup options, including this clever egg cup that is flat when unfolded. This shop offers goods from small British businesses, but they may ship internationally.

And of course, your eggs need to stay cozy. The same shop offers tons of cute cozies.
