Idea of the Week: Secret TV By the Tub
Hinged frame hides a small TV tucked into a bath-side bookcase
If you have a bath tub with this setup, odds are you'll never want to get out. Tucked inside a cozy alcove, creamy marble, a beautiful wall mural, and vintage-looking fixtures combine to create the perfect picture of refinement. This luxurious bathroom is part of designer Skip Sroka's home in Washington D.C. Although the entire room is a jaw-dropper, what really caught our eye was this secret nook Sroka built for a small TV — a guilty bath-time pleasure.

This clever hiding place is actually an incredibly easy DIY. Sroka loves to read in the tub, so putting bookshelves in the alcove is a must. "I wanted to relive the library look of the bookcases, so I added the architectural prints to the center of each bookcase to add depth of feeling," he says. Since he already knew that he wanted to put a TV on the shelf (it had already been wired accordingly), Sroka decided to work with the placement of the photos to discretely hide the TV. Sroka did this part of the installation himself — he simply screwed hinges into the frame, then screwed the other halves into the bookcases.

Of course, its worthwhile to talk about the rest of this beautiful bathtub niche. The beautiful mural is an antique Dufour hand-blocked mural that Sroka had removed from an old house and installed in this room. "What's wonderful about these murals, is that they are scenes of America produced by a French man who never set foot in this country," says Sroka. "So when you look at the mural there are people of all races living together as one society. Even though it's not accurate, it's a lovely thought."

| Sroka decided to place his tub in this alcove, because he didn't want to have to put it underneath the main window in the room and deal with privacy issues. So this nook was built, with the shower to one side, the room entrance on the other side, and a separate room for the toilet just past the shower. magdiego I can't help it - as a book lover, I assume the bathroom is ventilated enough so that the books aren't harmed by the steam? (I cringed a little when I saw this picture...)

msslynne I had been asking my husband to put in a window by my garden tub, I cannot stand how closed in it feels-he says 'no'-so I was considering a mirror instead, but don't neccessarily need to see myself either. However, I do love reading design mags and my nook in the tub and love all my bottles of soaps, lotions, potions and glassware-I DO have space to build the shelves on both sides and to have a mural and incorporate mirrors higher up for reflecting-I was looking for ideas to do something different with the entire space and this has got me thinking for sure. My bathroom does not create enough steam and is chill enough to have books near the tub and that is no worry at all and will get him to build me a drop down, no, a hinged shelf to pull towards me while in the tub to set my nook on and hold my bathtub things and coffee cup! Ok, now I am getting some ideas I can count on Hozz for that!
