Guest Picks: A Stitch For Modern Times
Quilted bedding and accessories for the non-traditional types
Quilting has come a long way since the days of the Americana quilts that my mom had in the house and the floral Laura Ashley number that graced my college dorm room for four years. Now this timeless sewing tradition is making a comeback with modern fabrics and patterns to make any style of home that much cozier. — Laura from JourneyChic
Wildfield Quilt - $168
Patchwork goes global with this busy but still beautiful quilt. I can't pick a favorite color; I love them all! But be careful: such a wild pattern means you should tone down the rest of the room.
Uzbec Quilt - $169.99
Oh suzani, how you make me smile! This set is reminiscent of traditional Uzbek suzanis, but it comes without the steep price tag.
Circles Quilt - $179.99
Simple circles in bright colors add punch to a patchwork quilt. I think this would be a nice choice for a teen's bedroom.
Suzani Quilt - $199
If you like the suzani style but prefer a relaxed bed, this toned-down print is a good choice. There's just enough of the traditional pattern to make you feel like a world traveler.
Ruffled-Circle Quilt - $129
Monochromatic swirls and ruffles make this quilt feminine and romantic. Pair it with yellow accessories for a popular combination, or try raspberry pink and mirrored nightstands for a glamorous look.
Alvorada Quilt - $348
Although the mustard yellow in this quilt isn't my favorite, the pattern is uniquely modern. This is a quilt that even a teenage boy could live with, as a topper to navy sheets.
Modern Quilt Wall Hanging by Olive Tree Textiles - $215
I've long been a fan of hanging textiles on walls, probably because my parents have a lovely quilt hanging in their home. They add texture and improve acoustics too. This quilt's striking colors and pebbled background would punch up a neutral room.
Original Framed Modern Quilt Block in Orange and Pink by Nstar Studio - $50
Framing fabric is popular now, so try framing a small quilt for a different look. I'd give it center stage in a small powder room.
Framed Quilted Yo Yo Set in Reds by Robayre - $37
These little quilted fabric pinwheels are called "yo-yos," and they are almost as fun as their toy counterparts. This red version would make a cute Valentine's Day decoration. It's available in other colorways too, and it would be fun art for a nursery wall.
Set of 4 MIsc Quilted Coasters by The Nerdy Owl - $10
Quilted coasters are a fun and practical hostess gift. These bright colors have me thinking of spring.
Handmade Quilted Coasters Set of 4 Mustaches by Originals by Lauren - $12
Who doesn't love a mustache? I'm not a fan of facial hair and can't quite get on board with the whole 'stache craze going on right now, but even I can get behind these cute coasters.
Blue Bird Kids Quilted Placemat by Krafty Granny's Home - $15
This quilted placemat for kids has a nifty pocket for utensils. Perhaps my son would be willing to keep his spoon in one place if it meant hiding it away in the adorable little bird.
Quilted Placemat Set in Marimekko Textiles by Plumdacity - $42
The random stitching, raw edges and bright fuchsia make these placemats one of my favorite finds. It kills me that the colors won't work in my dining room.
Wood Plank Wholecloth Quilted Table Runner by Shanna Quilts - $125
Faux bois? Fo' sho'! All the textural, knotty goodness of a tree trunk is stitched into this table runner. It is a neutral piece that will work with all your entertaining pieces.
Ikat Table Runner - $59.95
Ah, Ikat. I can't get enough of it! This table runner has light quilting (almost invisible in this photo) to give it some weight and texture. It looks nice on this rustic table, but it would be equally at home in a more formal dining room with white china and silver candlesticks.
Quilted KitchenAid Mixer Cover by The Quilted Tulip - $30
If you don't like your appliances to take center stage on your counter when they're not busy mixing cake batter, try a quilted cozy in a pattern that coordinates with your kitchen's decor. I love the pops of red in this one.
Quilted Potholder Set Neptune by Quilty Therapy - $10
Back in the '80s there was a popular craft kit to make potholders out of neon-colored loops. Remember that? My mom still has the potholders that I made for her. Perhaps it's time to upgrade her collection with a quilted set in modern colors.
Modern Curtains - $69.95
I didn't think it possible for quilted curtain panels to look modern, but these fit the bill. Airy and gently stitched, they're much more interesting than a plain-weave panel without distracting from other aspects of your room.
Hooty Hoot Quilted Pillow Cover by Now and Then Quilts - $29
As a mom, I spend a lot of time sitting in the chair in my son's nursery. A pillow like this one would provide comfort for my back and be fun for him to look at. Gotta love cute owls and argyle!
Chevron Pattern Pillow Made from Recycled Wool by PLYtextiles - $98
Wool can be recycled just as well as paper and plastic. Look how uniquely this chevron pillow up-cycles old bits and pieces. It would surely be a cozy addition to my couch.
