Small-Space Solution: Expandable Homework Center
Clever pivoting desk creates flexible under-loft workspace
This last-minute addition to a home in Kentfield, Calif. was designed to create an ideal place for the owner's son to do homework without using too much floorspace. Instead of building a desk that would at times be too big or too small, the steelworkers, architect, contractor, and interior designers collaborated on a desk that could adjust in size and easily fit under a loft ladder.

The ladder leads to a lounge and media center for the son. One of its rungs supports the desk.
A lower portion of the desk swings out for more workspace. When it's no longer needed, the extension can tuck back under the upper portion (and become a great place to store a laptop or keyboard).
Other rungs in the ladder were extended to create built-in bookshelves.
The whole structure is made of steel to provide ample support while keeping the design minimal and open.
