Usually the combination of antlers and home decor conjures up visions of big log lodges out in Jackson Hole. While these can be warm and charming rustic spaces, I was amazed what a keyword search of "antler" turned up for me on Houzz. Designers are working antlers into all kinds of spaces, and using them no longer requires harming an animal or taxidermy. Here's a look:

| Let's begin with the antler chandelier. This one was the most surprising of all to me; I can't get over how harmonious the furnishings in this glass box room are. Who knew the answer to "What light fixture goes with a minimal platform bed, a Nelson bench, and an Eames chair" would be "A rustic antler chandelier of course!" I think it works because it connects something inside the room to the expansive view of nature beyond. What do you think? |

patscats2 One day I wish it would become legal to mount the heads of hunters. Wouldn't that be cool? Animal heads on walls personifies poor taste. Exploiting animals is not what they were put on this earth for.

mrsjunior These are shed antlers. They fall off every spring. It's 100% natural and a part of the deer's life. The only animal exploited in the collection of shed antlers is the person spending their time trapsing through the woods to find them. And as far as a mounted deer on display, 99% of hunters don't hunt for the thrill of killing. Animals were put on this earth for nourishment and companionship. So what's wrong with wanting some deer meat?

Becky Harris Thanks Mrsjunior - I thought the real antlers shown were likely shed, but I wasn't sure. On top of that, I tried to choose ceramic, resin and other materials so as not to offend the animal lovers. These trophy alternative materials are part of the fun of this trend.
