Tiki Décor Ideas From a Vintage Airstream
Glam-camping getaway inspires cleverly kitschy home decorating touches
I live in a loft in Brooklyn, a recent transplant to Greenpoint (love my neighborhood!). I work as a freelance writer, blogger, stylist, gilder, and crafter. I curate a daily personal lifestyle blog called the Haystack Needle (http://www.thehaystackneedleonline.com). I'm also one half of the shop Cabin 7 (http://www.shopcabin7.com) — a collection of gilded objects for the home. I started out in magazines, working in the home department of Real Simple magazine and later worked as the home editor of Redbook. I love to scout cool finds for the home — everything from an amazing loveseat to a green laundry detergent that really works. I'm a new mama to our baby girl, Juniper, who amazes me every day with her curiosity for life and big smiles.

For a recent anniversary, my husband and I followed a friend's recommendation to Kate's Lazy Meadow in the Catskill Mountains and spent a weekend in a vintage Airstream. Owner Kate's a member of the B-52s, and she definitely uncorked some imagination in creating this space-age-cool lodging experience. We stayed in the Tiki Airstream which was decked out in super fun, kitschy décor. It's hard not to be happy when you're surrounded by colorful Tiki touches everywhere!

| Each Airstream at Kate's Lazy Meadow has its own theme for a unique, novelty experience. The trailers are parked in a "lazy" meadow by a creek and come complete with a hammock and barbecue grill for an easygoing weekend. You'll find many bright, trippy patterns of vintage fabric used as curtains and bedding in the Airstreams — the colors pop against the natural forest setting. |
The geometric, flashy wallpaper in the Airstream's kitchen complemented the Tiki-style straw curtain below the sink. I would call the wallpaper style "psychedelic cool."
Sure, you probably don't want to dress a room in kitschy accents from top to bottom (unless if you're decorating a novelty airstream). But one accent here or there would add a whimsical vibe to your love shack. Hawaiian print pillowcases? So fun.
Here's the entrance to the Tiki vintage airstream at Kate's Lazy Meadow. It's the perfect mural to set the tone for the kitschy-cool space.
This geometric wallpaper reminds me of the bold, retro wallpaper from the Airstream where we stayed. And the color orange suits the retro kitschy style.
Tip: If you're a renter or you're intimidated by installing wallpaper, try a geometric patterned stencil — like one of these stencils — for a similar look.

This modern planter could be at home anywhere with its simple lines. But it definitely channels your inner Tiki.

The vintage Airstream had a windchime outside to catch the meadow breeze. Tap into your retro roots with an owl windchimer.
A few vintage Tiki mugs are an easy way to add a whimsical twist to your home bar.
Tip: Mix a pair of Tiki mugs into a shelving unit with a bookish vibe to add some fun among all those hardcovers.

| Hello, bright patterns. Just like the wallpaper above, these melamine plates are wildly patterned with loads of color. These plates feel like a party, just like all the floral Tiki accents I found in the vintage Airstream. |

It isn't a party without some fun paper cocktail umbrellas. These whimsical party umbrellas feel right at home in a Tiki, kitschy-style space.

Casart Coverings Thanks for this ideabook, Jen. Great idea and it made me laugh-especially that last picture! Another suggestion for renters or wallpaper wary weekenders: try repositionable wallcovering that is easily DIY, especially in a small space. It can be removed without leaving any residue behind, plus it has the advantage of being reusable, too.
