If you're preparing to paint a room in your home, don't forget to look up and look at your ceiling as being the fifth wall in the space. Poor ceilings. They are often forgotten and neglected, and all the while they have so much potential. With a little creativity or perhaps just a coat of paint, ceilings can give your room that wow factor like nothing else can.

| For a harmonious, monochromatic look, use hues in the same color family for both the walls and the ceiling. Don't be afraid to use the darker color on the ceiling. This will create a space that is dramatic and elegant. |

It's perfectly fine to paint your ceiling with a bold color, even if the walls are white.
Tip: If you have high ceilings that you want to visually bring down, take the ceiling color about one foot down onto the wall. The room will look much more cozy.

| Tray ceilings are an asset to a room, but deciding how to paint them can be a challenge. I think it's best to accentuate the angles of a tray ceiling. Be bold and paint stripes or use a great accent color. This will give your space tons of personality. |

In this Caribbean-style bedroom, I created architectural interest by installing molding on the ceiling, creating a large square. Then I painted the inside of the square with a sky blue.
This is another fabulous way to create interest up above by using molding. Notice how the glossy paint finish allows light from the chandelier to reflect off of the ceiling, which creates a beautiful sparkle.

We just finished painting our dinning room, walls are Benjamin Moore Fernwood Green and the ceiling is Benjamin Moore Grey Horse. Amazing how putting two colors together can give the illusion of another color, The room almost gives off purple glow. Now we just need new furniture.
