6 Great New Uses for a Vintage Dresser
See how to use a traditional low dresser as a changing table, vanity, sideboard, bar and more
I live in a loft in Brooklyn, a recent transplant to Greenpoint (love my neighborhood!). I work as a freelance writer, blogger, stylist, gilder, and crafter. I curate a daily personal lifestyle blog called the Haystack Needle (http://www.thehaystackneedleonline.com). I'm also one half of the shop Cabin 7 (http://www.shopcabin7.com) — a collection of gilded objects for the home. I started out in magazines, working in the home department of Real Simple magazine and later worked as the home editor of Redbook. I love to scout cool finds for the home — everything from an amazing loveseat to a green laundry detergent that really works. I'm a new mama to our baby girl, Juniper, who amazes me every day with her curiosity for life and big smiles.

When I'm shopping at a flea market or antique shop, I usually spot at least one vintage dresser with a low profile and three long drawers. Sure, dressers are traditionally used to store clothes in your bedroom. But these low dressers also sit at that perfect height to be used around the house as a changing table, bathroom vanity, media cabinet, sideboard, or home bar. So next time you see a dresser you love (but don't need for your bedroom), think outside the box. There's a special charm that a vintage dresser adds to a space.

Changing table. Capture the vintage style you want for your little girl's nursery by using a low vintage dresser as a changing table. Who says you have to use the standard nursery furniture? The height and width of this vintage dresser is just right.
Tip: Most changing tables come with a tray to keep your changing mat in place. If you're using a vintage dresser as the changing table, be sure to put quilted contact paper underneath so the pad doesn't move around with your wiggly baby.

Give a vintage dresser a fresh coat of paint for an instant new look. Here, the changing table channels a beach-y cottage vibe.
Tip: If you're thinking of buying a vintage dresser as a changing table, check the height. The average height of a changing table is about 36" high, which is a comfortable height for you — so you're not bending too low or reaching for baby.

| This low yellow dresser is sure to be the focal point of this nursery. There's easily space for a changing pad and supplies. Once baby is potty-trained, this dresser would make a gorgeous piece for her big-girl room. |
Turn a dresser into a sink vanity. I've seen this design concept many times, and I'll never tire of it. If I ever own a home, I definitely want to scout out a beautiful dresser to turn into my very own one-of-a-kind bathroom sink.
TIP: You'll need a vessel sink to pair with your low dresser to turn it into a sink vanity.

I love the mix of styles you see with this sink vanity. A low vintage dresser is paired with a vessel sink and modern faucet. The result is one eye-catching piece for the bathroom.

Bar. This low dresser fits perfectly by the window as a mini home bar. And there are drawers to store entertaining supplies. I much prefer this design to standard bar carts: this dresser looks so chic and grownup.
| Buffet. This low dresser looks right at home in a living space — it could easily be used as a buffet by the dining table. Or I could see my husband's flatscreen TV looking pretty sitting on top. |
Sideboard. With a plate rack above, you can use a low dresser as a sideboard by your dining space. Store your flatware and tea towels in the drawers. This room has a modern cottage vibe that I love.

Dresser. It's easy to overwhelm the top of your dresser with stuff. I'd love for my dresser to look more like the dresser here. The top of the dresser is spare of clutter, so your eyes go to the gorgeous lines of the piece.
