I have always felt that a fireplace alone can define a space . The materials & design can set the tone of the theme for Traditional, Eclectic, Modern or Rustic as well as combinations of the above .
I have always enjoyed watching how a fireplace draws people into a room with it's promise of warmth & cozy ambiance . It's reason for being is to contain fire, one of man's earliest primal necessities because it was imperative to survival .
Beyond the primary function of fire I believe in the purpose it serves to balance the movement of energy . For example in feng shui theory the energy or ch'i that circulates throughout a home or room is serious business . In the practice of feng shui there are 5 elements that play a very important role in the forces that are essential to human life - earth, water, metal, wood & FIRE . Each is given the highest level of importance when considering use & placement in a space because they all impact the life giving, or reducing, energy within that space .
Then there's the aesthetic standpoint which I consider a wide open opportunity when it comes to shapes, sizes & materials . Here's where my imagination takes hold . The devil is in the details and that is what makes being in the design industry SO exciting !
