Add Soft Luxury To Your Home with Velvet
10 ideas for decorating with velvet: sofas, drapes, pillows and more
I work as a blogger for businesses although I do a variety of different types of writing. I particularly enjoy writing about all aspects of design and creativity. I think that your home should reflect your personality and that it should change as you change. More about me at www.kathrynvercillo.com and http://diaryofasmartchick.com.

Velvet. It's a fabric that's been considered both elegant and tacky. (Consider Velvet drapes in Victorian living rooms and then consider Velvet Elvis posters in trailer parks.) I happen to think it's one of the best fabrics in the world for clothing as well as for home design as long as it's used sparingly and appropriately.
The best thing about velvet is its texture. Not only does it feel soft but it looks soft, too. It immediately lends a sort of softness and warmth to the room. You can alter the depth of this feeling depending upon the color of velvet that you choose and the boldness of the piece that you choose it for. It's a flexible fabric if you're not afraid to play around with it.

This sofa is one of my single favorite items featured in a photo on this site. It's a really cool little shape that looks both modern and vintage at the same time. It appears to be on wheels so you can move it around easily. And I love the color! So cute. It also looks totally comfy since it's a velvet sofa.

A velvet sofa doesn't have to be totally bold to be beautiful. This more understated blue sofa is also a velvet sofa. It's been covered in a soft blue linen velvet that may be more suitable to the modern decor of some homes than the first example that I happen to love so much.

Speaking of sofas that are bold, take a look at this amazing Parapet Sofa. It's hard to say whether you're supposed to sit here, sleep here or lay back into it while being fed grapes by a harem! This one is a bit over the top even for me but I do love the raspberry-colored velvet lining on the bottom of the sofa and on the trim of the pillows. I could see incorporating velvet into a bed or sofa in that way.

Your bed is a perfect place to cozy up with the soft touch of velvet. Add a velvet blanket on top of your other bedding and you can grab it whenever you feel the need to get a little bit warmer.

A blanket isn't the only way that you can add velvet to your bed. In this photo, the boxspring of the bed has actually been covered in a mohair velvet. This turns a regular boxspring into a much more luxurious piece of furniture and allows you to get away without a bed frame. Gorgeous!

Velvet has the potential to make a space feel truly opulent. A lot of the touches in this room do that (not to mention the impact of the piano) but the finishing touch here would have to be the velvet drapes. Long, lucscious and luxurious. I love them!
Why hang velvet draperies when you can really go all out and turn your walls into velvet?! If you look at the walls on top of the wainscoting here then you'll be able to tell that they're made of velvet. The rest of the room grabs your attention but the soft walls will manage to catch you off guard.
The velvet in this spot is subtle, isn't it? Believe it or not those are actually velvet pillows sitting on those chairs. They perfectly match the rest of the decor in the room and they also make those seats seem a whole lot more comfortable to sit in!
I've mentioned many times here on Houzz that I really love chaise lounges and fainting couches. I've never really thought about getting one made in velvet before but now that I've seen this one I'll definitely have to consider it!
Is this a velvet chair with a matching velvet foot stool that we see here? It sure looks like it. If so then I could definitely see cuddling up into it with a good book or a glass of wine. What a great color, too, isn't it?!

michael_pdx Velvet has a luxurious texture but the word and fabric are burdened with tacky connotations. At best I feel it can be smartly self-depreciating and ironic: a promise of warmth that doesn't take itself too seriously.

victoria_d Velvet is usually not my cup of tea but I have to admit that the first sofa is fabulous.
