Just because it's a space primarily for kids doesn't mean it has to be all primary color alphabet decor, have some fun! Plush animal head wall mounts are a humorous and different way to add a punch to the walls.
I've found that organizing toys in baskets by category (dress-up, puppets, blocks, etc.) helps keep my girls interested. These clip-on chalkboards are an adorable way to label your baskets.

You could also easily make a DIY version with a label, some contact paper to laminate it, a hole punch in the corner and a ribbon tie strung through.
I use these rattique baskets in my playroom. The wicker is aesthetically pleasing; however, since it's actually plastic, it's durable and won't snag on fabric toys. I love them.
A great basic bookcase is a definite must-have. Make sure it's nice and sturdy, too — you don't want any little monkeys to be able to tip it over.
I have this colorful rug in my playroom now. It's very soft and adds beautiful color to my neutral-walled room. A rug is a great way to add fun without making a common living space too "kiddie."
Kid's table sets can be surprisingly expensive, and that's why I love the KRITTER collection from IKEA. The pieces come in fantastic colors, are solidly built and have a great polyurethane coating that makes wiping off crayon marks a breeze.
A collection of different pom poms and lanterns would be such a visually stimulating decoration. This Etsy shop has every color under the rainbow, including lots of lovely neutrals and grown-up colors.
I love the idea of using this wire curtain hanger, along with the matching DIGNITET curtain clips, to hang your children's artwork across a playroom wall. It's such a fun way to showcase all those kindergarten creations while adding color and style to your room.
Mod Mom Furniture has beautifully organic pieces created by a mom. Plus, they're gorgeous! If you can afford it, this toy chest would totally make your playroom.
I could totally see myself curling up with the kids and going through all of our playroom books in this sweet yet stylish rocker. Not to mention, I love any opportunity to work in a decorative throw.
A fun rug is a must, and I have this super shaggy rug in cream in my office. My girls love rolling around on it, so I think a colorful version would be a perfect playroom addition. And for this price, you won't stress about the inevitable mess.
If you want to do wall storage, Land of Nod's Storagepalooza cubbies are a great way to go. There are so many configuration options and lovely color choices. Plus, the open cubby system would make toy clean-up a breeze.
A canvas hanging chair tucked in a corner of the room would be every kid's dream reading nook. Or, knowing my kids, it would be the perfect place to hide from mom.
If you have to have a toy kitchen in your house, why not have one you love to look at, too? These retro pieces are positively charming.
This Window Daybed with open latticework would be downright charming under a sunny playroom window. Throw in some multi-patterned pillows, and you're set.
One or more floating fabric bookshelves would be a great way to incorporate your fabric into your playroom, while also tucking away books.
Don't forget you need somewhere for you to sit with your coffee while the little ones play. However, in a play space, you're really going to want something that is as stain resistant as possible. I have this couch, and it's the perfect combination of style and easy-to-clean microfiber.
This may be a bit out there, but I think a fun, retro-inspired crystal chandelier would be such an unexpected surprise for overhead lighting. Balancing out kiddie and adult style will make the room something you all can enjoy.
Yellow velvet panels would anchor the space while creating a warm, welcoming room.
Add a fun table lamp, and your playroom is done!
