We fell in love with Sarah's charming home when she uploaded her cottage photos to Houzz a couple of weeks ago. Born in London and raised in a very small house in Kent, England, Sarah, her husband, three children and goldfish have moved to Australia and now call Sydney home.
Sarah and her husband purchased their first Australian home in 2008. Quickly thereafter, and on a tight budget, the couple turned the "sadly neglected" house into a gorgeous beach style cottage.
Sarah loves finding vintage furniture and accessories, painting them white and creating a look of "old beach house ambiance with a fresh new feel". In her inspiring blog, Sarah documents her house renovation and her other life adventures living by the beaches of Sydney.
I'm very happy to introduce you to Sarah and her stunning beach cottage.

Please tell us about your "first meeting" with your house to be

The first time we viewed the cottage it was not only a fixer-upper, it was filthy and didn't exactly smell too good! However right away we knew it could be the one, we had been actively house hunting and rather than the actual cottage, it's location, 5 minutes from the beach, it's large plot on a quiet street and a few old features meant we knew it could be the one. So at that first 'meeting' with the Beach Cottage we looked past the horrors - looked up to the ceilings which were in good condition and fairly high, loved the old sashed windows and sneakily pulled up layers of carpet and linoleum to check out the wood floors. These were some of our main criteria because we knew with these we could work with the country-coastal look I love so much and not a big budget to create a laid back relaxed home a few minutes drive from one of the best beaches in Sydney.

The first step of your remodeling process

The first thing we did was to renovate the then family bathroom and turn it into an ensuite to the Master Bedroom - we blocked up the original doorway and opened a door into the bedroom, ripped out the old fittings and tiled wales and replaced with simple white tiles and classic fittings to create a large private bathroom. Next we painted all walls in white in every room of the house, removed the carpet, sanded, sealed and varnished the floors.

The biggest renovation challenge you faced

Our biggest challenge was the kitchen, there was no way it could be madeover, it was probably a health hazard and by this stage unforseen things had eaten into our budget and we could not afford a kitchen company to fit our kitchen for us. So we had to very quickly re-evaluate and find a more budget-friendly solution, so we looked to IKEA for help. We pulled out the old kitchen, re-lined the walls and fitted an 'un-fitted' kitchen from IKEA with open shelving and units on wheels we thought this would fit in with the laid-back theme and we knew that we could add further units as time went on.

Your favorite style and colors

I would describe my style as casual and coastal but this has evolved actually from more cottagey and country - so I think there is a healthy mix of all those looks in the cottage and because I change it around quite often and love to play.
I think it is quite often a case of which mood I am in as to which look is foremost. Obviously though, being by the sea, the coastal theme is usually paramount as it lends itself to our surroundings so perfectly.
Although I love to decorate with white, I find this is a perfect neutral for colour! My favourite way to add colour is with heaps of flowers around the cottage and with piles of books. I have recently found myself adding more soft blues and greys to the cottage, but I think I'll always mainly love soft mushroom and putty with a healthy dose of white!

A spot in your house that makes you very happy/proud

I love the Sitting Room at the cottage - it has an old squashy sofa that has our history with it, it is my little sanctuary at about 8pm, I sit with some books or magazines and a drink...turn the lamps on and light lots of candles, have some supper and put my feet up. I have an old meat safe from England in there and a vintage trunk from Hungary...lovely old vintage furniture with character and wearing that old faded patina.

Your next house project

Our next house project? Wow there is a very long list! We are about to embark on cladding for the front of the house, a deck to the front and a new roof. We also have French doors to the back to add and would like to replace some of the windows...oh and replace the Family Bathroom. The list goes on.

5 things that houzz readers need to know about you and your blog

1. A Beach Cottage was started to document the turnaround of our fixer-upper to a home with relaxed coastal vibe...so my blog follows our renovations, decorating and achieving a laid-back look on a budget - I post before/afters, tutorials and often videos of transformations!
2. I also post about my adventures in finding things for our home in thrift stores, and how easy it is to find things for a low price to make a home... in particular I blog my love for vintage things - china, quilts, old furniture and linens
3. I also add in a few things about Australian life - seeing as our 'seachange' seems to interest so many of my readers...regular videos and pics of life the Aussie way...
4. I love to take photos so I try to make the 'afters' good ones!
5. I to show through my blog that a comfortable home is easy to attain and hope it inspires people to get on and start creating a fabulous home regardless of how tight the budget might be...or where it is located.

Best tip for the remodeling beginner

My best tip is to think outside the box on everything you do and our motto here at the Beach Cottage is 'The Power of Paint' - when we've been unable to afford to replace something we have spent a few dollars on a can of paint and had a go...with some amazing and budget-busting results! For example we painted the front door, even though we hated it, but didn't have the money or expertise to replace it ourselves and it looks great, we painted some old concrete steps with paving paint in a neutral dark grey and they look as good as new and we zapped an old blue summer house in a slick of white and it looks like we just went out and bought it! Technology in the painting world has moved on heaps in the last few years according to our local paint shop which means things like tile paint and concrete paint actually do what they say on the can - we painted over our bathroom tiles a year ago, from pink to putty and they are still going strong.

Last but not least: as a houzz friend, Sarah has chosen a Pottery Barn giveaway gift card to one of the lucky readers that will share their thoughts about her house and interview..

Thank you for sharing your charming cottage Sarah!.

For your chance to win a $50 Pottery Barn gift card, comment on this interview by Sunday, November 1st, at 5pm EST.

I found Sarah's blog recently and have been inspired to work on my home with my existing resources with cans of paint and thrifted items. I spent summers by the ocean and while I am not near water now I think I could sooth my soul by adding similar style to my landlocked suburban colonial. I LOVE your site and can't wait to start my idea book!! I can stop saving magazine clippings! Hooray for less clutter! Thanks so much!
I've been following Sarah's blog for a few weeks now. Now that the weather here is turning cooler, the photos remind me of warm summer days relaxing at the beach.
I have been so inspired by reading Sarah's blog about her beach cottage. Many of her ideas have been recreated in my own home, giving it a more coastal feel since I too live by the sea. I look forward to every encounter with abeachcottage, and look with anticipation for each blog update! Sarah is such a down-to-earth person, and is the type of woman that I would love to meet in real life! I am so thankful that I found her blog, and I will continue to learn from her as she keeps inspiring us all through her journey of making over her beach cottage. Thanks for featuring her! Well-deserved!
I'm fairly new to Sarahs blog. I used to go online in the morning to read the local paper and check my email but now Sarahs blog always comes first. Her home is like a breathe of fresh air to me. So creative. I've been going to garage sales and fleas for years now and people have just kind of tilted their heads not understanding! Well Sarah does and just check out her followers.I'm so glad to have found my peeps out there!

abeachcottage has been an inspiration to many people on twitter this is where I met Sarah, as she taught us and showed all of us her many updates and even did her own giveaways, then she started doing her own videos (my favorite) Sarah has such talent and she honestly loves sharing with the world, I am not shocked on bit to finally see that someone has discovered this beautiful womans talent for costal living , Sarah gave me the inspiration I needed to help decorate my new home I bought two months ago...thank you abeachcottage...~janice
I adore all the white. As I work unpacking and decorating, I am keeping more of the white and less of the color in my collections. Love the inspiration here.

Beach Cottage was the first blog that I found and now I am addicted to it. Love all her finds because I am always decorating on a budget.
jacque says:
Sarah's home is lovely! Although it seems to have lots of white, which is normally "stuffy", the beachy uncluttered look keeps it "liveable". I haven't read her blog, so I will venture on over there. I am curious to see posts of her ensuite bathroom as it is exactly what my husband and I are planning to do in our country home.

Thanks for introducing us to Sarah

I've been following the Beach House blog for a few months and it has been so inspirational in ideas for my own little cottage, even though I'm not anywhere near a beach here in landlocked Wisconsin in the U.S. My favorite summer get-a-way is to the shores of Lake Superior which is a wonderful place if you ever get a chance to visit.
I love how she took all the white and made such a comfortable, cozy feel. Currently trying to incorporate thrift store finds into my own home, so looking forward to following Sarah's blog. Thanks!

dione says:
I want to move to the beach especially as the tempature begin to drop.
I'm so glad you shared Sarah blog. I discovered it a few months ago and have been reading it daily. She has much the same taste & likes to decorate with salvaged treasures as I do. She appreciates the history of her finds and I identify with how she gets her husband on board to help bring home the bigger items. I get equally excited about finding someone elses trash to be my treasure. It's great to know that we can still have a comfortable and stylish home in these hard times.
Sarah rocks - as usual. I'm just loving her place with all its Ikea n thrifty treasures!
She does such a good job. Makes me fall in love with the power of white paint!
How fun! I got to check out a few new photos that I haven't seen before! Love your blog, Sarah!
janna says:
I LOVE LOVE LOVE The Beach Cottage Blog! She inspired me to paint a bunch of stuff white (and a few things black) instead of buying new and I am loving the results! Thanks for sharing so many photos of your beautiful cottage.
I love all the containers (baskets, bins, suitcases, pails, vases, etc.) all over the place. They're extremely pretty and very practical. And I love that they don't all look the same either, each seems to have its own little history and purpose. Great job!
alliebean says:
Ahhh...this whole house is like a fluffy white cloud you could float away on...so nice.
vdr928 says:
Sarah's blog has always been such an inspiration to me. I love her attitude that it can be done, and done beautifully WITHOUT much money. I think people without so much money to work with are much more creative and have homes that do not look like everyone elses! I have used many of her ideas and thank her so much for sharing them with us. I, also, LOVE paint! I recently helped a friend redo her kitchen and I can't count the times I said, "Well, we could always paint it!" And... paint it we did! We even painted all her appliances with stainless steel paint!:) We used a faux granite kit on her counter tops... looks JUST like granite(I'll include some photos !) We were inspired by Layla (The Lettered Cottage) to paint the cabinets black and replace hardware. Anyone can do it if you will just have confidence to try. We remodeled the entire kitchen for very little money! Thanks so much, Sarah, (And Layla)for all your inspiration!
vdr928 says:
My last photo and "thanks" to Chris from Just Beachy did not appear. Here is one of the photos for the kitchen (about finished) and the island Chris inspired us to build. You can do it! We did! :)

Thank you for this interview with Sarah, it's just lovely. I first met Sarah through Twitter and love her style. I am still in awe of that gorgeous trunk she found a few weeks ago. I could easily see myself relaxing there at the beach house, such a serene style with soothing white - very dreamy.

So many great inspirations - thanks for sharing your home with us.
I've enjoyed many hours at my computer looking at Sarah's and others' blogs and pictures....of course, I have to do this while hubby is away. I don't want him to think I spend my whole day looking for home ideas! Sarah's home makes me want to get cozy on the white comfy couch with some fun decorating magazines and an ice tea and spend the hours dreaming of what my home can become!

I normally just look and admire the beach cottage style. I don't live near a beach or have a cottage to decorate. None the less I find abeachcottage blog has inspired me to incorporate some of her creative ideas in my home. I am attempting to create a family friendly and relaxing home on a tight budget as well. Thanks Sarah.
If I could blink my eyes to magically transform my house, this beach cottage is exactly what I would want to see when I opened them!
The beach cottage is so serene. Love the neutral, natural color scheme, makes it feel so tranquil, simple, less fussy, and easy to live in.
Sarah has done an amazing job! I've been watching her blog for months now and I don't miss a post. Again, a total amazing transformation that inspires me.
I have enjoyed "a Beach Cottage" for a long time, and am soothed by her style every time that I visit. I love primitive , combined with the pottery barn look and stuff scavenged from the roadside.

This is my FAVE blog. I have to go here for my daily fix of coastal living. I live in Sydney too but more towards our gorgeous Blue Mountains. Thanks to Sarah im learning ways to sneak a little pc of coastal heaven in my house without it looking too odd... and without complaints from hubby as we are on a mega tight budget atm... LOL.
bobbypin says:
Truly beautiful. Definitely has the "cottage feel" without feeling "country". Colors work beautifully together. Very pulled together!
deiprice says:
I have always dreamed of living in a beach cottage...Sarah makes everyone feel like we CAN do it! I love reading her blog...she gives such info what with her photos of her 'works-in-progress', her thrifty finds and re-doing them and just her thoughts in general. I am redoing my home and even though we live NO WHERE close to the beach, I am using the colors of the beach-cottage in fabrics and am doing furniture in the simple, beach style. Thrifting is also something we are doing and reinventing with what we have. Thanks, Sarah, for sharing all you do with us! It really does give us hope!
LOVE IT!
I follow Sarah's blog almost daily....she always has something to share!
Fans of Sarah will confirm that the beach cottage is a fun place to stop by for a visit that always inspires or gives us a giggle about discovering life in a new location.

I LOVE Sarah's style. I travel to her cottage daily via the internet. Its always a inspirational and peaceful trip.
Sarah's definately a gem!
I love the courage Sarah shows in her decorating style. She might not think of it that way, but for a person like me, who tends to overthink decorating, the idea of just grabbing a can of paint and going for it is inspiring and liberating. Thanks for the further inspiration!
Such a beautiful home!!! And such wonderful ideas and inspiration.
I love A Beach Cottage. Sarah is one of my bloggy friends that I visit every day. I always find inspiration for decorating my Sea Cottage. She has very similar taste as me, specifically the all white palette. And recently she's been posting A Beach Cottage T.V which is so fun to view...her voice is comforting.
Funny that Australians have not embraced her blog, she just tries too hard to convince people of this magical life she has created in her asbestos fibro house in the burbs (yes! the burbs! 5mins to beach if you`re in a lear jet).
Australians are unpretentious & down to earth, Sarah has yet to learn this, we can share our "moments" without motives. No denying that she has done wonders with the interior of that house but in my circle of blogging buddies many of us have done that & more and we don`t have the constant need to exaggerate, seek accolades & constant attention nor create a TV show (aka Heene`s!).
Blue summer house? your garage was a blue summer house? Perfect example Sarah, call it as it is please!
Love Sarah and her Blog! Jealous of her location and relaxing lovely house but still love her! Her Blog always gives me a smile and inspiring ideas. xx
