So far this series, we've talked about embracing those curves and using repetition to make a statement. This week we have rectangular shaping in our sights. Join us as we highlight some beautifully designed spaces that use squares and rectangles in their composition.

| In this space, the same long rectangular shape is repeated in the tub, rug, windows, towels and wall hangings. Using the same shape in different sizes and patterns is cohesive but resists becoming matchy-matchy. |

Repeating a rectangular shape does not have to mean repeating the exact same shape in a multitude of places in your room. In this example, the architectural lines of the rectangular windows and floor planks are reinforced by the long window shade and square-back chairs. Notice how the chairs are backed in a deep brown tone to highlight their shape.

This space also takes its inspiration from the window architecture. Notice the 3 different rectangular shapes of the window panes. The large rectangle is reflected in the large rectangular rug, while the smaller long rectangle is reflected in the shape of the coffee table. Even though details like these are not evident at first glance, they make a room seem put together and pleasing to the eye.

Here, a square shape is the repeated element. The shape is reinforced without becoming gimmicky because it is used in varying sizes and with varying materials. Notice the two crocheted pieces on the chair have repeated square shapes in bright colors, but they are styled differently.
This is the equivalent of dressing your family for portraits in coordinating outfits instead of matching outfits. Jeans and white button-downs are out and a thoughtful collection of cohesive colors and shapes is in!

Another pleasing effect is to use one shape to lead the eye to another similar shape. In this photo, the rectangular table acts as a classic "T", leading your eye straight towards the focal point of the fireplace. Both shapes reflect the rectangular bump-out that accommodates the fireplace.

Here is a great example of rectangular repitition. Note the similar elongated rectangle of the sinks, cabinet drawers and mirrors. Even thought the mirror has been placed vertically, the shape and weight is still the same and complements the cabinetry perfectly.

In this example, the window shape is reinforced quite literally in the shaping of the mirror, light and sink.
