One Bright Spot (4 comments)

After interviewing Sue Teso about her home in Sandwich, MA, my mind kept wandering back to a specific photo of her living room (first in this bunch). The room is awash in natural light and calming colors - except for one great orange and white throw pillow.

It's the perfect amount of color - it gives the room so much energy without ruining it's overall peacefulness.

Inspired by that photo, I went in search of other spaces that are just as nicely balanced by one confined spot of color. Here are some of my favorite examples:
Sue Teso's family room is positively inspirational.

This little oasis of seating at Orchard Farm is a perfect bright spot amidst dense greenery.

Imagine this dark bathroom without the yellow chair. Too intense and sort of spooky, right? But with the chair - super cool.

Flowers might be the easiest way to add that little spot of energy. I love the contrast here of a muted seascape with bright flowers.

This front door in the Chelsea neighborhood of London was photographed by my friend Meg. I can't stop looking at it. In the middle of a lot of gray, it feels so inviting.
Chelsea Yellow Door
Over and over again, I found single yellow pieces that really popped against a neutral room. The color is strong enough to work on it's own, but it never overwhelms.

This headboard is a perfect complement to fluffy white bedding.

This piece is a great example of how a pattern can "feel" bright. It stands out and begs for attention - so it's perfect against a neutral beige wall.

These blue chairs are so sunny and fantastic - perfect for a simple yard.

OK, so this room is actually completely wallpapered in eye-catching yellow. But I couldn't help but think - wouldn't that fantastic wallpaper work in a small corner of a room decorated in serene blue solids?

The inside of these shelves are amazing. I love that they're sort of tucked away - they seem like a little hidden joke.

I love this orange artwork - it reminds me of Mark Rothko's color field paintings and it is the perfect tone for the bookish space - bright, but warm.

A chandelier is just about the last thing I'd think to look to for color - but I seriously love this orange piece. It's so much fun, and kind of elegantly cheeky.

I also can't stop looking at the bright yellow door..... I love it, to my surprise and delight!!! I never thought about a bright yellow door before!
I would definitely live in that home with the yellow door. I can't stop looking at it either. We should all live in a place that says WELCOME like that one.
I know - as soon as I saw it, I desperately wanted to paint my own door yellow. I also hadn't ever considered it as a front door color - and I can't figure out why!
