Surround Your Fireplace With Tile, Brick or Stone

We went with an all-metal surround. It's a modern reproduction cast from an original, made by Fires Of Tradition in Alberta, Canada. It is perfect for our 1905 house. It's our only source of heat (except the kitchen stove) and it works great. We've got couches on either side of it to cozy up for warmth.

Would love to know how people have handled a free standing wood stove. We have a rather ugly wood stove taking up one whole corner of our very tiny living room. It has hideous brick in the corner behind it in two tones of brick (changing from one dirty looking type of brick to a super dusty whiter looking brick half way up the wall). I would love to get rid of it and reclaim that entire corner of the room but it is our main source of heat at this time. We have talked about converting to a wood oil furnace but it's not n the budget any time soon. In the meantime I am thinking of painting the brick white at the very least but am curious if it is possible to build a surround or mantle around a free standing wood stove. It really and truly is hideous and it's placement in the corner makes it impossible to arrange furniture in a natural feeling manner. it's just this big empty space in a tiny, crowded room.

Painting the brick would seem to be a great and inexpensive option. Another thing you might be able to do with the furniture is switch it out for something more low profile and smaller scale so the room feels less crowded and more visually balanced. If cash is low, you could check craigslist to see if anyone would want to trade their lower profile furniture with your bulkier furniture. I have a small living room and selling the sofa's out via craigslist made a huge difference. Maybe you could look for a love seat instead of a sofa, making sure that the arms and back are as sleek as possible.
