The Succulence of Succulents in the Home

I work as a blogger for businesses although I do a variety of different types of writing. I particularly enjoy writing about all aspects of design and creativity. I think that your home should reflect your personality and that it should change as you change. More about me at www.kathrynvercillo.com and http://diaryofasmartchick.com.

Succulence is defined as juicy, appetizing, delectable and interesting.

Succulents are water-retaining plants with fleshy leaves.

For me, the title of this ideabook is more than just a fun play on words. It really emphasizes the fact that I think life should be succulent and that I think succulents really can add some succulence to home decor.

My favorite succulents are rose-shaped cacti. They have the delicate layered beauty of big, gorgeous roses. However, they are longer lasting. It's important for people interested in these plants to know, however, that there are many different types of succulents so you can seek out the ones that are right for your home.

Succulents are versatile plants that can live indoors or out. They're a great plant to put on full display. However, small succulents can be used to accessorize the home, too.

Most of the succulents that I'm familiar with are green, ranging in shade from light to lush. I would decorate around them accordingly, thinking of them as houseplants. However, there are white-ish and pink succulents, too. These could definitely make a bolder statement in the home.

Enjoy!
For outside spaces, I do love the thicker and juicier succulents. They don't retain that same lovely "rose" shape but they see a bit more wild and natural.
I love people who can get serious enough about their plants that they put them brightly on display. I've got a bit of a brown thumb so succulents are the perfect plant for me to try to do this with since they're very forgiving!
Here is a larger version of a similar style of succulent as the small ones in the above photo. What's interesting to me here is how this plant is almost white. Combined with the black pot, I could see it looking really neat in a mod home.
The succulents I'm used to are cacti. However, there's a really cool kind of succulent called the tillandasia (or "air plant"). I know several people who have started incorporate these cool place-anywhere plants into their home decor.
Wow, I've never seen a succulent with such a great bright color. I think this would be a great plant to decorate around in the home or yard!
Ah yes, here's some of that great color used in a raised bed outside. I think it's so gorgeous!
I really enjoy how the different plants have been combined in this landscape. In addition to the succulents around the potted plants, there are other flowery plants in the background. Also, it appears that everything here may be native to this environment which is great for green landscaping.
Adding plants to the bathroom always seems like a great idea to me. They bring nature indoors and make the space feel really rejuvenating and relaxing. I've rarely seen succulents in the bath area but think it's a terrific idea.
I wanted to wrap up again with the rose-shaped succulent cactus that is truly my favorite. I just think it's such a lovely strong and feminine plant. I especially adore how it's set against the smooth black rocks here. I could definitely see using the combination of the two in a really soothing bathroom display.

Beth I saw this wreath this summer and I think it is gorgeous--I haven't made one yet, but someday I'd like to try. Here is how Martha Stewart made it: http://www.marthastewart.com/article/succulent-wreath

Glendon Robert Frank I recently visited Succulent Gardens, a nursery in Castroville -- one of the most incredible day trips I've ever enjoyed -- well worth the visit.
