Mix and Match Seating (4 comments)

View Slideshow
Remember your Grandmother's dining room set? The large table with the extension leaves, the matching chairs, which were often needlepointed, the custom made pads to protect it when it wasn't being used? Times have changed. You can still use Gram's set, but it's more fun to break it up. Keep the table and pull up some aluminum French bistro chairs. Or pull the chairs up to a Saarinen Tulip Table.

The photos below show how people are mixing up their dining areas. Sometimes they use large upholstered wingback chairs at the ends of the tables, sometimes it's an unexpected pairing of a table with chairs, sometimes there is a bench or a sofa on one side of the table, sometimes there may not be so much as a matching pair of chairs at the table. Don't be afraid to drag in some chairs from your kitchen or living room and experiment with your dining room seating. You never know what kind of winning combination you'll create!
This arrangement really shows off the owner's love for chairs.

Fun upholstered chairs don't overwhelm the room when they are used sparingly.

Love Victoria's tulip-style chairs with the antique wooden farm table.

A great, unexpected mix of an elegant round marble-topped table with Wegner chairs (I think these are Wegner - does anyone know for sure?).

A built in bench and Bertoias make a great set here.
Dining Room
Wow! The green armchairs anchor the table and provide just the right punch of color.

Using the same style with a roll of Lifesavers array of color is so great!

This whole room is a crazy mix and it just works.

Classic and modern work here because of the neutral palette.

I've said it before and I'll say it again (and again): I see Dr. Evil playing chess here. And I mean that as a compliment - so bold, so stark, yet the black makes it potentially eeeeevvilll!
