Brian mentions, re: the woven blinds"...you'll keep them raised 2/3 of the way up..." I was speaking to my drapery man about the roman or woven shades and he said
readymade window covering: the woven shade. Tip: Run out to a big box store, grab yourself bamboo or woven grass, then make yourself a deal that you'll keep them raised 2/3 of the way up. This blocks out that extra amount of light meant for a valence but with the fully operational function of blinds.

I really think the silhouettes would keep things nice and light. As long as you keep them up when your son is looking out they should hold up well. You can also tip them so you can see out similar to a blind. You could also add drapery panels o these and keep the light look if you care to at any time
